Battlefield is one of the most iconic FPS games of the past few decades. From the humble beginnings of 1942 to EA's upcoming Battlefield 2042, we break down the history of Battlefield and its legacy over the years.

Battlefield has released several games over the last two decades as one of the most recognizable franchises in the video game industry. With Battlefield 2042 just around the corner, now is the perfect time to take a look at the History of Battlefield. In this video, we'll start from the beginning with Battlefield 1942, and how it set such a significant foundation for future Battlefield games to build off of.

Battlefield has an emphasis on land, air, and sea combat, creating a series that relishes chaotic and exciting gameplay, eventually expanding upon the core Conquest mode with other ways for players to engage each other. Every Battlefield game is notable in its own way, but Bad Company 2, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield 1 are standouts for various reasons, whether it's a greater emphasis on campaign modes, or taking the Battlefield destruction capabilities with the Frostbite engines to an all-time high.

Battlefield 2042 is slated to release on October 22, 2021, on Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PS4, PS5, and PC. The game will increase the size of Battlefield matches to a massive 128 players, with customizable load-outs and the incorporation of brand new Specialists in place of character classes. We’ll have so much more to break down with Battlefield 2042 in the coming days, so stay tuned!

I love Battlefield so much. I love the "all-out war" that it tries to capture.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how fucking brave DICE was by making a WW1 AAA game? I'm now studying a War Studies master's at my dream university because of that game's influence.

I think bfv was more a victim of presentation. Most I found just had an issue of how it was presented and how the devs addressed the dissatisfaction. They really didn't do themselves any favors

Battlefield V problem was that they took the wrong direction with the first trailer. They focused too much on costumisation instead on giving the fans the gritty WW2 feeling they wanted. Comments from the developers facing the backlash didnt help the games popularity and the content delays and never given features were the nails in the coffin. The War in the Pacific DLC turned the game in the right direction but sadly they ended content Support after that, laeving out the whole easter front and a chance to redeem themselves like DICE Did with Battlefront II.

Can confirm that 2142 Titan mode was legit and the satisfaction of actually destroying the Titan from the inside was well worth it.

I played hundreds of hours of Battlefield 2. I was obsessed with that game. Wonderful memories and friends were made. 2142 was really fun as well, but 2 will always be near and dear to my heart.

The titans of 2142 layout will be in my memory rest of my life.
Those god damn corridors

And the bug you could utilize when the titan was moving, you glitched in between the containers... Oh the times

BFBC2 was my first battlefield game. My girlfriend (now my wife) bought it for me as a gift on pc. I had never played a battlefield game at the time and it was a pleasant surprise how different it was from call of duty. I remember playing it on my days off till 4 ot 5 am. Met some amazing people in game. Some of which i still have contact till this day.

For me Bad company 2 is a master piece.

Still has arguably the greatest map in any shooting game Wake Island so simple yet so elegant

You never played BC2 but hyped it up pretty well. Mad respect for not being biased man.
Except when it came to BF3 you didn't mention how good the PC version was and only showed the PS3 version lol

25:01 that's why I love Battlefield 1. Because the way they portray all of it makes the developers seem like they actually cared about this war and it's significance in history. The writing for narrator just hits so hard for me, seeing as many people just don't care about history or find it to be useless.

Battlefield 2 was my personal fav BF game of all time because at the time, it was absolutely state-of-the-art graphical fidelity for its time, it is still to this day, the most complete Battlefield game ever made, it had BOT support / MOD support / LAN Support / MAP Editor / The BattleRecorder / Eventually it had fully unlocked 64 player maps for singleplayer and coop / It had the Commander Mode which is massively missed now / and was set in the modern era. To me, there has never been a Battlefield game ever released that was a more complete experience for everybody then Battlefield 2 (until BF2042). Wish you woulda showed off some of the BattleRecorder stuff because that was just absolutely incredible, being able to watch your past battlefield matches, freely roaming the camera all over the entire map, with pause and slow-motion functionality, with the smallest file sizes of all time for something thats recording the entire 20-30 minute match, could be used in both MP and SP vs BOTs. It was the ultimate capture tool for capturing some of your most iconic moments in Battlefield, and the dumped it. For absolutely no reason. It's never made a return and has only ever been seen in BF2.

I think the main reason people disliked BFV for the inclusion of women, was because BF1 set the bar too high as far as immersion went. Like you said, Operations in BF1 was so fucking good, and then DICE made a complete 180 and went full PR Gen Z on BFV.

It really does boil down to historical accuracy, because I guess people expected BFV to just be an upgraded BF1, which no one would've complained about. The idea to include women wasn't a bad one, but the execution was definitely poorly done.

no the problem with battlefield 5 was "if you don't like it, don't buy it" so we listened to them rather than them listening to the people

I will never forget playing the BF1942 demo for the first time.
I was 15 years old. It was one of those weekends when me and a couple of friends shlepped all our gaming equipment (including super heavy tube monitors) into one of our friend's basement.
The moment one of my friends asked if we wanted to try the demo of that new WW2 game together, all other games became irrelevant that night. It was super fun even though it only had one map (Wake Island).
BF1942 was also the first game I've played online some time later and some of my best memories of my first days in online gaming are thanks to the BF Pirates mod.
I'm still social media friends with some of the guys I've met playing BF Pirates in the early/mid 2000s. Glorious times.

Bad Company 2 is the first "Battlefield" game I played. I had the most fun playing the game for variety of reasons. Battlefield is like NFL football where it's not an 1 man team (takes entire team to work together to earn that victory). I hope BF2042 turns out to be an good game.
