the tanks were also prone to extreme malfunction, they would stop working and require special crew to dissamble the engine, the tracks may just snap out, even the canons may just snap out from the recoil (who btw sometimes where just medium artillery pieces adapted to be used in a tank)

They where the pioneers but it also meant the crews where literally rat labs.

Man this game is so detailed. One of my favourite shooter games ever. And that Detail is horrifying lol

Being in a tank during WW1 could possibly be the worst job back then.

In battlefield 1 you can also hear the crew burning alive after you blown up the tank.

In bfv you can often hear your tank crew coughing and struggling in the tank when you retreat after getting severely damaged

Almost 7 years after BF1 release and I still learn new things about this game, level of detail in this game is truly unprecedented.

Another minor detail of tank crew conditions BF1 shows off are the improvised face protection for the crew. Tanks were armored, but the armor was relatively thin, and more importantly mostly riveted. Riveted armor is highly dangerous for the crew inside, as rivets are prone to breaking when the armor is violently struck, creating shrapnel inside the tank. In multiplayer, most tank crew models are wearing a sheet of chainmail over their face, something real tank crews would do to protect their faces from shrapnel and spalling inside of their tank.

Tankers in WW1 also often used splatter masks while driving their vehicles which Battlefield 1 also shows in the multiplayer.

Imagine if DICE today was the same DICE from 2016. With the technology available today for gaming development they would be DOMINATING the FPS market

Battlefield V expanded on this detail even further by having your crew commenting on certain events, if you listen closely after being heavily damaged, you can hear crewmembers coughing, swearing or screaming when the vehicle is on fire, on the other hand if you take alot of glancing blows, you can hear crewmembers laughing and mocking at the bouncing shells.

Also the paint used inside the tank would fragment when hit hard enough, blinding anyone not wearing goggles

I wish EA still made great games. The game telling you facts about the great war while loading into a match was straight up awesome on itself. If only 5 had that much love trown into it

Here's a somewhat fun fact. Back in world war two infantry would put smoke grenades on the back of enemy tanks, the smoke produced by the grenade would get sucked into the tank's ventilation and make the crew think they were on fire and evacuate the vehicle. This happened in the earlier years of the war and slowly died out as tank crews became more experienced as well as the quality of the tanks ventilation(it was still trash but better than before). Sometimes soldiers would also open up the smoke grenades to use the white phosphorus inside as an anti personal weapon and anti light vehicle weapon.

I read a fascinating handwritten battle report made by one tank commander on the first day of the Hundred Days Offensive at the national archives in London. Mixed in with the grisly details of machine gunning Germans at close range were frequent rest stops and fresh air breaks, in the middle of combat. These men would rather get out amidst the bombs and bullets than stay inside their armoured gas chamber.

'Poorly ventilated', that sure is one way of describing 'sharing the fighting compartment with the engine'

Nowadays we have air conditioning and a variety of explosive appetizers for anyone who happens to get close and free popcorns to those walking on foot.
