First-year international students can't access food bank

Student groups are voicing their concern over a Metro Vancouver Food Bank policy that excludes international students.

If you’re in international student and you show up to a food bank you should be deported on the spot!
If you can’t afford to study here than you lied on your application and it should be revoked. International students should not be able to work or receive government support.

Why is it “really, really awful”? It’s been shown that international students are taking advantage of food banks only because they want to spend their money elsewhere. They have a responsibility, when they come to this country, to have enough income to provide for themselves.

If I donate to a Metro Vancouver food bank, I want it going to a struggling local, not an international student.

I am an immigrant, and the food bank is for Canadians not for internationals, especially international students. Studying in a foreign country is a luxury so if you cannot afford it then stay in your country.

As South African currently working in Vancouver, the food bank is meant to be for Canadians. It makes no sense for someone to leave their home country to come “study” in Canada when they can’t afford to live in Canada. As immigrants we need to stop exploiting the kindness of Canadian people and take responsibility for our lives and the choices we made when we came here.

I am an immigrant myself! Why should food bank provide in the first place? If you cannot afford/ feed yourself then you should better hop on that plane back to your place. As a student I never expected someone to provide me with free food. I struggled and worked even with part time and even getting just 8 hours/week . And mind you we had 20hrs/week limit

how is he paying for international education yet hasnt planned for food? hopefully he is studying a home economics certificate for 6 months and returning home

If an international student needs to be dependent on food banks. Why did they did they migrate here in the first place?

It needs to be for those who can not afford lavish international expenditures, in order to keep banks sustainable

I agree. Their should be a law in every province if you are a international student you cannot go to food banks and if you do you will be deported and for citizens who do help them for
Illegal food banks will get stiff prison time. If you cannot support yourself do not come here as a international student period. Also if your a International student in Canada and are not in university or college or school and are working instead you should be immediately deported.

If $20, 000 isn't enough to support yourself in Canada then the amount needs to be raised.
