Light adds so much depth, dimension, and interest to your scene that it is essential to try and include some form of light if at all possible. Some of the best photo conditions possible for grand landscapes is the couple of minutes before the sun finally hits the horizon when it hits the landscape one final time, especially if there are clouds present.
