3 'Must Know' Pentatonic Patterns

In this week's video, I show you how to play 3 'must know' pentatonic patterns which you can use as flashy runs, or as subtle fillers.

It's best to think of these runs in separate blocks, or shapes. This makes them more versatile and easier to create variations and transpose them into other keys.

I recommend transposing these into a few other keys so you're technique isn't just limited to the key of C minor.

Happy shedding!

Great work Simon! Two other really effective variants:
1) displace the start point by an 8th note. Horn players use this all the time. Check out Wilton Felder’s iconic tenor solo on Street Life, and
2) use different rhythms within each lick, keeping the notes the same. For example, mix 8th and 16th notes 👍

Trumpet player here. After years of playing/struggling with boring drill books, I have been yearning for scale development that is meaningful, applicable to real-life playing, and FUN. I am going to practice these patterns against a backing track. Awesome!

Thanks for this vid! I use pentatonics all the time on guitar, but applying them effectively on piano has always been more difficult for me. Definitely going to add these runs to my arsenal.

It’s very difficult to choose a favorite pattern but I think maybe #3
Probably bc it’s easier for me to play than the other two😅
