Xbox: Microsoft's Activision-Blizzard Buy Is Almost Too Big To Comprehend

Microsoft just bought Activision Blizzard for almost $70 billion. Nothing in the history of the industry even comes close. What happens to Bobby Kotick? Are Call of Duty and Overwatch now Xbox exclusives? Is this deal good or bad for the industry as a whole?

I hit the floor when I heard this news. Crazy. Microsoft played the long game in the video game industry and now they ARE the industry. I'd be mad if Game Pass wasn't such a good product.

Think about this, EA is in gamepass, Activision is owned (when it goes through) so all those games will be in gamepass, and Ubisoft already announced that they are putting Ubisoft+ on Xbox.

I'm really surprised that Microsoft pulled this off, but with all of the issues Activision has been going through probably opened up the opportunity to sell. Bobby won't survive this acquisition and I even bet the board will either be dissolved and funneled or will be completely revamped. I'm really curious to see how this all plays out, but COD for example, in the next 3 to 5 years I bet become exclusive.

The two things that make me less concerned about this news: 1) the poor track record and reputation of Activition/Blizzard leadership. 2) The fantastic and very consumer-forward management and leadership of Microsoft / Xbox.

Yeah, I agree Paul. It’s a huge power move. Microsoft could force people to move to a Microsoft platform with this. Sony can’t afford huge moves like these. I wonder if Sony tries a smaller purchase with Square.

I am so torn about this. On the one side it´s great. MS will make sure all that filthy shit going on in ActBlizz is handled. There will be funding, proper leadership, hope for us gamers about future Blizz games. Potential is endless. On the other hand.. Monopolism. Exclusivity. Tons of potential issues. It really do change everything, this is one of those milestones shaking up the whole industry. I am cautiously curious.

Microsoft feels like the amazon of the gaming industry. Gaining control of their pipeline (in this case gaming developers and publishers) and providing a subscription deal that is impossible to pass up that continually gets larger and better as the company grows (game pass).

That's just crazy. MS is really aggressive right now. I mean, PS was about to have a huge month (PR- wise) with the release of Horizon in Feb, but MS just blew up the newswire with this one! SMH...

While I believe the current state of Microsoft will probably continue to be consumer friendly and possibly even revive Actiblizz titles to be good again, I think we should be gravely concerned on what happens when Phil Spencer and the board of Microsoft step down and more greedy and non-consumer friendly people take over the company. Microsoft has a monopoly over the gaming industry right now and this could ultimately hurt gaming if not placing preventative measures in now for circumstances like this.
