CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After Elle (Reese Witherspoon) impresses Professor Callahan (Victor Garber), he asks her to apply for his internship.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Reese Witherspoon stars in this romantic comedy, the feature film debut of award-winning Australian director Robert Luketic. As a ravishing Miss Hawaiian Tropic, sorority president, and calendar girl, Elle Woods (Witherspoon) is a big hit on the campus of her sun-drenched Los Angeles college. She's also got the perfect boyfriend in Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis), a wealthy East Coast blue blood. Fearing that his snooty friends and family will never accept the bubble-headed Elle, however, Warner dumps her before heading off to graduate law school at Harvard University. Determined to win back her man, Elle enrolls in the same imposing institution, quickly becoming an object of scorn and ridicule, especially to Warner's old prep school flame (Selma Blair). Despite her penchant for malls, makeup, and tanning, Elle is no dummy and is soon showing elite Ivy League snobs a thing or two about class, self-confidence, and courtroom victory.

Elle was extremely smart. Everybody was putting her down, making fun of her and thinking she was stupid. And in the end, she graduated at the top of her class at Harvard.

Gotta love how the others laughed at her and were dumb struck when she figured out how to solve the case.

People laughed at her during this explanation but she made a very good point from a different point of view that most people wouldn't even think about. Elle was actually very smart and was not given enough credit.

The best thing about this movie is that it doesn't discourage girls to be themselves, to be feminine and barbie esque and still be pretty smart. Society ususally discourages women who are too girly and even if they accept them, they think they would be dumb. Like a father or mother telling their daughter that she can't become a doctor or a lawyer because she is a girl. Telling her to find something easy. This movie eliminates all the stereotypes.

i just realized, when elle was sayin her argument, at 0:59 vivian was showing discomfort while the whole class was laughing on elle, she knew Elle's argument gonna win the case before anyone else. She might look down on Elle, but she knew Elle was smart

It's great how she kept her girlie character untouched by all these need-to-look-serious protocols that all students seemed to follow so to give the idea of next generation professionals; she was different and she remained so, and that was the key of her success!

She got a 179 out of 180 on her LSATs, one of the most famously difficult tests in the country, after studying for 6-8 weeks at most. Not to mention that her original score was in the 140s, so she learned and adapted her thinking and mindset so quickly that the test became a nonissue. That alone is certified genius level stuff.

She was never stupid. More than that, she was always kind, attentive, adaptable, and observant. Those combined qualities are their own type of intelligence.

aww they cut out the next lines.

Callahan: Do you think she woke up one morning and said "I think I'll go to law school today."
Emmett: That lapse in judgment aside, I think she's got a lot of potential. Here's the Windham file.
Callahan: Smell this.
Emmett: What's that?
Callahan: It's her resume.
Emmett: Smells good.

I love how even though Warner dumped her, called her dumb, and undermined her entire intelligence, Elle is still classy enough to be polite and say "Although Mr. Huntington makes an excellent point."

The fact that everyone was stunned when she made her point and it was a good one was a little sad.... but the genius guy nodding in agreement after she began to elaborate made me smile. He picked up on her argument and realized that not only was it a valid defense for the parents, it put toxic male "stud" culture in its place. And not only did he recognize what she was saying, he agreed. That simple nod said "Yeah, she's right."

Callahan may have been revealed to be a total creeper later on, but I do think he was legitimately impressed with Elle's unique perspective on interpreting the law.
