“We tell the stories of our elders in a never ending chain, ”
Pre-colonial Philippines loved to tell stories and would often pass it down to their children and grandkids through words and not written. I know Philippines has probably a small portion of being Polynesian but that part gave me goosebumps

I think it's amazing how disney and pixar's movies are making people proud of their cultures. I am proud of my scandinavian heritage, and have been thrilled with the success of How to Train Your Dragon. The fierceness and pride of the vikings and the harshness of their world really reflected in the tone of the movie. I know I am priveledged in that my cultural heritage is more 'mainstream', It makes me so happy to see other people having the chance to experience the same pride and joy.

thank you for this, every time I hear the original I'm left wanting just slightly more and your version is just the right length to satisfy that feeling.

Origins:

SAMOA meaning 'sacred heart' or 'sacred center' (Tagata mao'i) --> TAHITI (Ta'ata maohi) --> HAWAI'I (Kanaka Maoli) --> Aotearoa/New Zealand (tangata maori) It's a chain. We literally are one people and it makes me so proud to be Polynesian. Despite all the stupid trivial arguments and disputes between us Polynesians we are all one and the same people. I look at NATIVE Hawaiians, Tongans, Tahitians, Niueans, Tokelauans, Maori's, Cook Islanders and Tuvaluans and see my literal blood brothers and sisters! I am so proud of our heritage and thank Disney for creating a movie that displayed our culture in such a beautiful way!

While this version is excellent, and I really really wish the entire song had been in Tokelauen, the way it was cut for the movie was perfect. The cast on screen stopped singing when the song switched to English to show that this culture is so far removed from the audience that they literally don't speak english. It was really well done!

Is it weird that this makes me want to cry?? Lol i think i'm still just so glad Disney finally made a movie about our Poly people and culture and did such a GREAT job at it ❤️

My family comes from Maui but I am the first Generation born away from Maui and my kids don't understand the importance of our heritage and are mad because I made them learn Tokelauan. I made them watch this movie and explained everything about it and in the end, they were more appreciative of their culture. Thank you, Disney!

strangely, the non English parts are the parts I remember most.

When you re-realize the soundtrack was Lin-Manuel's work

So for those who want them, here are the lyrics! (Couldn't find original comment with them)

Aue, aue
Nuku i mua
Te manulele e tataki e
Aue, aue
te fenua, te malie
Nae ko hakilia mo kaiga e
.
Tatou o tagata folau e vala'auina
E le atua o le sami tele, e o mai
Ia ava'e le lu'itau e lelei
Tapenapena (o lo o lo hāka)

We read the wind and the sky
When the sun is high
We sail the length of sea
On the ocean breeze
At night we name every star
We know where we are
We know who we are, who we are

Aue, aue
We set a course to find
A brand new island everywhere we row
Aue, aue
We keep our island in our mind
And when it's time to find home
We know the way

Aue, aue
Nuku i mua
Te manulele e tataki e
Aue, aue
te fenua, te malie
Nae ko hakilia mo kaiga e

Aue, aue
we are explorers reading every sign
we tell the stories of our elders
in the never ending chain
Aue, aue
Te fenua, te mālie
Nā heko hakilia
We know the way

Aue, aue
we are explorers reading every sign
we tell the stories of our elders
in the never ending chain
Aue, aue
Te fenua, te mālie
Nā heko hakilia
We know the way

We read the wind and the sky
When the sun is high
We sail the length of seas
On the ocean breeze
At night we name every star
We know where we are
We know who we are, who we are

Aue, aue
We set a course to find
A brand new island everywhere we row
Aue, aue
We keep our island in our mind
And when it's time to find home
We know the way

Aue, aue
we are explorers reading every sign
we tell the stories of our elders
in the never ending chain
Aue, aue
Te fenua, te mālie
Nā heko hakilia
We know the way

Wow, i love this song. I love the feeling of freedom it gives me. To even begin to imagine the lives of those great voyager's on the open sea, nothing between them and the horizon. This culture is incredible and deserving of all the attention this movie brings it. As a human i am proud just to call such incredible people brothers and sisters.

I love that every different part of the song has different pitches, as if its one generation to the next

The Polynesian culture is so beautiful and their music sounds strong. I adore the Polynesian people.

That ending is the vibe. It fits perfectly and I never want it to end. The Harmony and the melodies all fit together in such a way that feels beautiful, and literally resonates in the soul

This version is so much stronger and the way it starts with he “away awayyy” catches you straight away and it’s happier in a way... I love Moana but I have to say this version truly better... please like this comment!

We had Moana in our theatre class last 2018. Should've found this earlier, this version is much better.
