The difference between Excel formulas versus Excel functions.
Welcome to Excel in a Minute!
In Excel, there are two ways to calculate data. Using a formula or using a function. Let’s start with this question, do you know the difference between the Excel formulas and functions? Or are you just using Excel as a fancy calculator?
In Excel, a formula is an expression that calculates or operates on the value of a cell and may contain functions, operators, and operands; while a function is a predefined formula. When using a formula or a function, an equal sign should be placed before the expression or the function syntax because if you do not put an equal sign before the expression, the expression will be displayed as texts and will not execute the mathematical operations or the functions.

Functions and formulas are among the most essential elements of Excel. They both perform calculations and produce certain results. Although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, it is important to know the difference between them.

In this tutorial, you'll learn the difference between functions and formulas in Excel, get overview of them, as well as see how to insert a function and enter a formula in Excel.
