How to Use the IFS Function in Excel

Показать описание

The IF function is one of the most popular functions in Excel. But writing nested Excel IF formulas in situations when more than 1 condition has to be checked can become cumbersome. If you have Excel 2019 or Microsoft 365 you can use the Excel IFS function instead.

📈 What You'll Discover:
- Excel's IFS Function: Learn to utilize IFS for various logical tests, replacing the need for nested IF statements.
- Practical Examples: Follow along with two real-world scenarios, including salary comparisons and feedback emoji creation using IFS.
- Custom Formatting: See how custom formatting can transform numerical weekdays into textual representations.

👨‍💻 In This Tutorial:
- Salary Comparison: Compare salaries against a benchmark, categorizing them as higher, lower, or the same.
- Feedback Emoji Creation: Convert employee feedback into emojis and add conditional formatting for a more engaging data presentation.
- Bonus Tip: Explore the potential of VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP as alternatives to complex IFS or IF statements.

In this tutorial I'll show you how easy it is to use this logical function when testing for multiple criteria. Your formulas will be much easier to read.

Since the IFS function only checks for the TRUE condition, how can you include an else condition in IFS? There is a simple way around this. Check it out at minute 02:42.

I'll also show you how you can use conditional formatting in Excel (on emojis) to visualize results better.

As a special bonus tip I'll cover how you could replace the Nested IF formulas with the VLOOKUP function.

00:37 Testing for 3 conditions with IFS
02:42 How to include "else" statement in IFS
04:40 Excel IFS with conditionally formatted emojis

This channel is my “go to” place whenever I think ‘there must be a better way to do this since I learnt excel 32 years ago’ 😀
Also enjoy how you learn or refresh yourself on another function - in this case conditional formatting. Relevant to the solutions well..
Thank you

Leila -- Thank you for clueing me in to the use of F9 to check results within formulas. While the use of F9 function is not the purpose of your video, it is the gift I took away with me. And of course, a refresher on IFS is much appreciated too. Your tutorials are always helpful and enriching in direct and unexpected ways. As a student, I don't always know where to start asking questions but a gifted teacher helps me form my own questions. You are awesome!

Hi Leila.. thanks for the fun IFS and emoji formulas. In case anyone is interested, when using IFS, you can also terminate the final test with any non-zero numeral such as 1, as in: =IFS(B6>$C$3, "Higher", B6<$C$3, "Lower", 1, "Same"). Even negative numbers will work like -1 or -10. Probably TRUE is the better option for readability and clarity, but always interesting to note other options in terms of how EXCEL interprets the arguments of a function. Thanks for the videos.. always good learning and fun at your channel :)) Thumbs up!!
