I was in London and Oxford a bit over a month ago and did my annual "buying too much to fit in the suitcase" routine (11 paperbacks). The Piccadilly Waterstones is excellent, especially with Fortnum & Mason almost right next door. The Trafalgar Square Waterstones is probably my favorite - the basement is huge - but I always pick up something at the Oxford Waterstones. I miss the old Foyles and skipped the new location on this go-around, and many years ago a large Blackwells was across the road (I purchased a shelfful of Margaret Atwood's novels in paperback that she signed when she stopped in after giving a reading in Wales - everything but THE HANDMAIDS TALE!). But on your next trip you must stop in at Hatchards, down the street from the Piccadilly Waterstones - it's been operating since 1797 and has one of the best bookstore staffs around.

I've often found the paperback editions of newer books, especially novels and best-seller nonfiction, in the UK well before those editions hit US bookstores such as B&N.

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen is a fantastic book if you want to read a literature classic, because it's not particularly long, but it's funny and fun
