Why Ab Workouts DON'T Work?! | Pamela Reif vs LeanBeefPatty

Ab workouts have flooded YouTube but which ones are really worth your time? With the likes of Pamela Reif and LeanBeefPatty getting involved, it can be hard to separate the good from the bad...

*Disclaimer: Unfortunately, the YouTube algorithm thrives on titles and thumbnails that could be perceived as clickbait. Although I find this particularly distasteful, as a means of reaching a new audience or encouraging my current audience to invest their time into my videos, I must work with the algorithm rather than against it. Statistics have highlighted just how effective aligning titles with the algorithm is and although this can be frustrating for many (myself included), I will always ensure that my titles:

1. Never promote false promises or unrealistic expectations.
2. Will more often than not ask a question.
3. Are worded in a manner that although might be perceived a certain way, are still open to interpretation.

Appealing to more potential viewers gives me the opportunity to further the spread of what I believe to be useful information surrounding the topic in question, in addition to a positive message which often surrounds mental health, with the goal of helping as many people as possible.

It should also be noted that the majority of my videos are based on audience suggestions. ~90% of my audience are women, therefore, the majority of videos are created to appeal to my dominant audience.

It must also be noted that although goals often vary amongst individuals, a lot of my opinions on movements are within the context of building muscle (hypertrophy) and therefore, should be considered with that in mind.

Thank you for giving me your time.*

She actually said you can strengthen your bones with a pillow? Well that's poetic

I’ve been doing 5x20 weighted reverse sit-ups 3x week for the past 8 weeks, progressively overloading the weight each week and have seen amazing results so far.
Thanks for another great video Harry 🤗

I think the movements that lack spinal flexión are targeting more of the transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, and possibly diaphragm. in Pilates for example, you can get serious definition (with eating a proper diet of course) with the lengthening of the core muscles, keeping back flat vs flexión. I think it’s important to work the core as a whole unit but to each their own. for the exercises that get into the hip flexors very easily I would recommend shortening the range of motion. both produce great content, however it would be great to add in the technical side of the movement so you’re not just mindlessly fluttering your legs and injuring your lower back

Really enjoyed the breakdown but would love to know if there’s a ten minute or so ab video you’ve seen on YouTube that you’re like, yes this all great, would highly recommend for at home. If not, would you consider uploading a video of you doing a routine you’d recommend for home?

A lot of the arm and leg movements in abdominal exercises seem like different ways to distract yourself while doing an isometric hollow body hold. For a client looking to train for core stability for daily life (picking up kids for example), do you think isometric hollow body holds are useful?

Im a new subbie and anxiously awaiting your home work out guide! I have absolutely no time to catch the gym during the day and gyms in my country doesn't open past 7pm so ive been wanting to build an effective workout routine to muscle build at home. for reference i'm a new mom, 10 months postpartum at the time of this comment. I'm 5 ft 7 at 117lbs with a fupa from childbirth. Due to being a new mom with a new promotion at work my time isn't as free as it once was to hit the gym during opening hours. before motherhood i was 135lbs of lean muscle, well toned and i'd really love to get back as close as i can to where i was before pregnancy.

This video comes at just the right time! Wanted to do a 10 min Pamela Reif Video bc when I trained a lot 2 yrs ago I had a sixpack and did these every other day with my friend. After watching now I get that my sixpack at the time probably didn’t exist bc of pamelas 10 min videos but bc I did a lot of decline crunches with weights and ate a lot healthier and with a calorie deficit. It makes so much sense that you should train your abs the same way you train your other muscles.. Don’t know wjy I haven‘t thoughg of that lol

I don’t see how ab workouts will do anything if your nutrition is crap. I think working the TVAs is much more important than working the Rectis abnominals… plus people ALWAYS do AB works wrong anyways…

Thoughts Harry??

Reverse crunches are the ONLY thing that's done anything for my tummy area so far. I'm a woman with a naturally hourglass waist but wanted it to be more fit looking. I do not do any oblique exercises because it's more important to me to keep my extreme waist curve than have actual abs and I don't want any width. I definitely recommend (from my dumb non-professional view) reverse crunches + diet for other women who specifically want to *maintain* their hourglass look. I'm not saying it will give you that shape because it probably will not! But it's really hard for women like me to find ab movements that work but don't ruin the certain aesthetic we want to keep.

In order for this ab review vid to be a 15/10 it needs more kittens and/or a Truffle appearance. Otherwise 10/10. I hate abs. I hate abs. I hate abs. So thanks for reminding me they are important. 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I like to throw in one ab exercise a workout. Body weight or added weight. I keep it pretty simple and I'm pretty happy with my results.

I follow ab workouts because I'm real lazy with abs and do 10 minute videos at the start of my workouts. Because no one really does them at the end of the workout. The important thing is to do the ab videos repeatedly before changing to a different video.

Video Notes:

Informative again, nothing to really say! Need more kitty content though still!

Making a comparison of Pamela using only one video is quite poor in my opinion. I have been doing her exercises for 3 years and my abs look phenomenal l. Can’t thank the woman enough for all her training. The only crap she did was the mobile app for nutrition which I think is pure marketing to capitalise on her image .

Thank you so much for your Videos!
I‘d love to hear your opinion on Pamela’s „lower ab workout extreme“!!

Have always wanted more visible abs-but I realised recently it really is so much about genetics… saw a woman in the gym who was easily 1.5-2X my weight and size, not particularly more muscular, but her abs were clearly standing out. I’m literally much smaller and train them with progressive overload using cable crunch/captains chair/reverse crunch (different days overall like any other muscle and 11 sets a week) and have even got my cable crunch up to higher than my own body weight and STILL they barely show… it makes me crazy…😂

The other day I was doing one of Carolyn Girvin's Final Epic workouts (day 22) where the goal was to do 100 reverse crunches (with toe tap) in 5 minutes. I can do that with ease, so I placed a 15-pound weight on my lower abs (held lightly with the tips of my fingers just for balance) and then the exercise became challenging. What are your thoughts on weighted ab reverse curls? Other instructors through the years have told me it doesn't work, but it works for me. I've been doing them since the 90s's. ps- your videos rock. I love them! Thanks!
