But you still have your mind...
What I've found that helps:

Run some kind of complex noise.
-Rain
-Fan
-I recommend Sleep Bomber on youtube.
-Adjust EQ to match any outside noise that gets through.

Run video or audio of something that is only mildly interesting or comforting but won't keep you up wondering what happens next.
-Documentaries
-Comfort TV shows that you've seen before.

I run noise and video at the same time.

Change sleeping location. I need to change where I sleep a couple times a month. It's like the old spot becomes stale.
-Switch which end of the bed you head is at.
-Move your bed
-Make a new bed elsewhere

Blue light filters on all screen at least an hour before sleep time.

All assuming you got your sleep hygiene down and are capable of relaxing at bedtime.

I have to sleep with a fan, and then I have to create a story in my head and continue to tell it till I fall asleep. Otherwise my mind races from one idea to the next and I’ll lay awake for ages.

The problem is, its in my mind, not actual external noise

Say the following, in your head
"I fall asleep easily and wake up refreshed."
I'm yawning now.

I use those! They’re brilliant, block the sound better than any other type of earplug that I’ve tried ❤️

I have managed to go to bed early & sleep well for the past 2 years. I started by having routines at work and having hot bath before sleep preceded by a light exercise.

No. I still hear and im hyper fixated on the smallest noise. I need white noise like a fan next to me or even tv static.

Bed
Blackout blinds
Dim red light
Read fiction book until sleepy
Podcast on (nothing engaging, . I like Triggernometry)
Eyes shut
Try to induce the Ganzfeld Effect (hallucinating while eyes are closed)
... I know it sounds mad but every time I manage to get some hallucinations going, I'm out like a light. It's like pushing yourself toward a dream, then you just slip into sleep (for me at least).

I sleep like a baby when I wear soft ear plugs. And so does my wife when she's having lady hormone thingys.
Have an awesome year Stuart, keep up the great work. I really loved your motivational content also. Some of those positive beats and a bit of drone footage, nature and real life. I would love to show you so much of Australia. Your lady is gorgeous mate, so happy you found a kind and smart plus beautiful lady. Wow!!

I need some rain sound, calm music on low volume... :D

It's not external noise but rather all the noise in ones head. The harder you try to fall asleep the more mental chatter. I know this is bad advice to give but if your mind is racing tip back a few strong shots. A bit of booze will negatively affect your restorative REM sleep until your body is done processing the alcohol but getting very little or no sleep at all is even worse.

I use Bose Sleepbuds playing white noise.

I find that having background noise (TV, music, sleep sound machine, YouTube playlist, etc) helps much better. Ear plugs seem to just let my mind run wild. Like even wilder than normal.😂 To each their own though❤

Yes!! 👏🏽 this has been the secret of my sleep success for years now. (Well, relative success, great improvement anyway.) The place I work at has loads of earplug dispensers on the walls so I snatch a few here and there, snip the thicker ends down a bit for comfort, and it’s so much better. They’re like a colourful tiedye pattern to boot. I work midnight shifts, so it helps that I can’t hear my family and large dog walking around during the day when I’m trying to sleep.

I've tried those and I still hear a ton of things.

Then i dont hear sounds and i like to hear my fan buzzing away and I need it for a good nights sleep.

It also blocks other noises to where I cant hear them

Do they also kill the inner negative chatter driving up my stress levels? If yes then I’m in!

I listen to movie commentary and other longer stuff on YouTube

Tried it 2yrs ago, and I found it completely impossible to keep them clean. Whether or not you have cleaned your ears, the silicone picks up a tremendous amount of dust, which made me reluctant to repeat wearing them.. Now, I use one of my pillows to cover my head, and it works.
