Great content. Short, concise and to the point. Good to see videos that aren't deliberately stretched to meet time frames.

Also should have compared Microsoft Virtual PC.

VMware Workstation Player 16 allows you to have up to 32 cores. I use that version instead of the newer ones because its installer is half the size of the newer ones (and still bigger than VBox7). Hard to justify the VMware bloat.

VMware Player and Workstation use some memory in heavy disk load situation as a ramdisk. Check the memory usage of the host, when you run those kind of benchmarks. I did some for myself two years ago on windows and different linux distros, to see performance differences and everytime i ran disk benchmarks, the memory usage gone up between 4 to 5GB - on windows and linux host.

Edit: You can also have similar read/write results under Virtualbox. Go to the Configuration of the turned off VM, from there to the Storage Controller and enable “Host I/O Cache”.

test with 4-8 cores would be useful as well, how well many cores are utilised and 'transferred' to virtualised system.

Thanks for the video. After seeing a bunch of other ones measuring irrelevant and nonsense things. I heard everywhere VB is slower, but judging from this video not that much slower, at least not so much to just disregard it. And with VB, you get encryption and snapshot features for which VMware asks you to pay.

I'm running a skylake intel and planning to do a new build, do you think it would be worth going for a gen 4 ssd for vmware use?

On alderlake with linux guests hd video playback is fine, windows guest isn't worth it I guess.

in my experience, QEMU/KVM on GNU/Linux easily beats both VMWare and Virtualbox out in performance provided your guest OS supports graphics acceleration without using a passthrough GPU. I rarely use either VMWare or VirtualBox anymore because of just how much better QEMU/KVM is.

I need help desperately.
My single score on my host is around 2000 on Geekbench 6
My single score on my Virtualbox guest (linux) is around 1200 on Geekbench 6
Thats almost half of the performance, not anywhere near the 10% overhead shown in this video.
I've enabled Vt-d in bios, i have enough ram, i gave it plenty of cores too.
General usage is slow, youtube cant even play without stuttering.

That's surprising I benchmarked SuperIP and VirtualBox needed 30-50% more time to compute 4 Million digits of PI.

Virtualbox sucks because of the 256mb limitation of vram

vmware is bloatware. also, there are portable versions of virtualbox (unofficial)
