Autistic self-care is crucial for individuals on the autism spectrum to maintain their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Autistic individuals often experience sensory overload, social anxiety, and difficulties with communication and emotional regulation, making self-care practices essential for their overall health and happiness.

Here are some reasons why autistic self-care is important:

Promotes emotional regulation

2. Supports sensory processing

Many autistic individuals experience sensory processing differences, which can lead to sensory overload or under-stimulation. Engaging in sensory-friendly self-care activities, such as listening to music or taking a sensory break, can help individuals regulate their sensory experiences and promote a sense of calm.

3. Encourages self-awareness

Autistic individuals may struggle with self-awareness and self-advocacy, making it challenging to identify their needs and communicate them to others. Engaging in self-care practices can help individuals become more attuned to their needs and develop self-advocacy skills, leading to improved self-esteem and a stronger sense of self.

4. Promotes physical health

Self-care practices, such as regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and getting enough sleep, are essential for maintaining physical health. Autistic individuals may struggle with developing healthy habits, making self-care practices critical for their overall well-being.

5. Improves social skills

Self-care practices that promote relaxation and reduce stress can also improve social skills, making it easier for autistic individuals to interact with others. Engaging in activities that bring joy and promote self-confidence can also lead to increased social engagement and improved social skills.

In conclusion, autistic self-care is crucial for maintaining physical, emotional, and mental well-being. By engaging in self-care practices, autistic individuals can improve their emotional regulation, sensory processing, self-awareness, physical health, and social skills, leading to improved overall happiness and well-being.

Being fairly newly-diagnosed, importance of self-care was something I had no idea about. In hindsight it makes sense, how many things about myself we're left in the I don't care bin.

Without my anxiety medication I felt like I was in prison. Now I'm a lot better. I'm still not where I would like to be but I don't feel like I'm in a prison as much and I can do activities that I couldn't before at times that I couldn't before and I can think clearer instead of getting stuck in a dramatization loup I can now talk to myself better to detraumatize situations that scare me and I can find solutions easier. With therapy also of course. But before even with therapy I was stuck and not moving forward it had been years. It was really time for me to get the extra help I needed with medication.

I know people who say homeopathic stuff has helped them, but it's important to recognize it's just a placebo. Anything could work in its place just as well, as long as you tell yourself it will. The benefits aren't huge, but placebos are indeed effective to a degree.

I would recommend for anyone considering buying the pills to cut down their environmental impact and go for another kind of placebo. A herb or type of tea or something when you're in need of support is much kinder for the Earth :)

Thank you so much for the information. I am an older woman. I've been bullyied by the people in my neighborhood. It is going on for more than ten years. The people in this town make a big effort to make me feel as bad as possible. Every day they bully me when I go outside. That is really crazy!!! I don't get it, why would you do something like that and every day? So evil...

I'm at the start of my journey towards diagnosis, after over 50 years of trying and failing to be neurotypical, at last I know why. Tried ear defenders and they were tight and uncomfortable as I wear glasses. Someone suggested loop brand, but I went for a cheaper brand and love them. Now when environmental noise triggers me, I can put those in and things are quieter. SO much better, I literally and physically did with of relief.

Being constantly under stress and each trigger building on earlier ones, led to many meltdown and wrecked my mental health.

I am 61/m and live in the US. I discovered that I was an Aspie when my son was diagnosed 15 years or so ago. One look through the DSM-IV and suddenly everything was far clearer. When the DSM V came out I had my sense of self ripped away once more. Over here, the doctor's acknowledge that I'm on the spectrum but won't come out and say "Asperger's." There is no treatment or therapy available for adults. over 20 years of therapy and no one came up with that on their own: I've spent years teaching my current therapist about it, but I'm starting to suspect that she has not done any research it on her own. Asperger's is truly the invisible handicap, and the truth is that over here, they do not want to see it.

I know you will probably not see or reply to this comment but I'll post it anyway, so diet and exercise can really help my autism, I recently read a book on this saying exercise and diet can help autistic people and it seems you are saying that in your video, but you see I spoke to my music therapist about exercise and diet and she said there is no conclusive evidence that it helps mental health conditions other depression, so I'm at a loss, so if you see this can you give me any insight into this?, thank you.
