Is letting a baby 'cry it out' really the most effective way for them to learn how to sleep?

First of all, it might be very comforting to know that you are not alone if your 6 month old is waking up frequently during the night. This can be especially frustrating though if you've been used to getting some sleep up to this point. 25%-50% of babies start to wake up around the age of 6 months again, and what do you do about it? One of the methods that people talk about is "crying it out", where you simply put your baby in the crib at one time at night and you don't go get them until a designated time in the morning, and if they cry all night then that's okay. This has actually been proven to be highly effective. It teaches babies that they're not going to get what they want by crying, which is you. After a period of 1 to 2 weeks of letting them do this, then they usually start to sleep through the night on their own and self soothe. There are other methods if this isn't acceptable to you. As long as your baby doesn't have any medical conditions, it's probably worth checking on them and making sure that there aren't any immediate needs that need to be addressed. But if everything is okay then there's nothing wrong with letting them "cry it out" if you're okay with that.
