Human desperation is something that many of us never experience in its truest form, which we should be thankful for. However, in life, not everything is always such a cake walk for everyone. As a group of people were headed to California in the 1800s, they would be besieged by storm after storm, requiring them to halt their progress and dig in. Unfortunately, as their food supplies ran low, this lead to some tough decisions being made.

Thank you for watching Roanoke Tales and I hope you enjoy Real Horror: The Cannibalistic Tragedy of The Donner Party

I live near the Donner Trail in the Wasatch Mountains where I frequently hike. In 2020, I was on the trail and found a rusty piece of metal. I took it to the Donner museum in Orangeville where it was authenticated as a Donner Party artifact. It was a hitch for oxen. They let me keep it because they had some in better condition. I feel proud to have a piece of history! Sad for the hardships the travelers endured.

I just read up on this and this john stark guy was an absolute chad, he carried 9 kids out on his own and they all lived.
This guy needs his own movie.

I used to work with a guy named Donner, who was a direct descendant of those people. He brought in some stuff and family letters for us to see regarding the incident. Pretty interesting.

I've binged 3 stories already and the Wendigo gave me some chills. I absolutely love the story telling. Keep up the great work 👍

These are things that have always made me appreciate modern luxuries; automobiles, hotels, or planes. These people couldn’t drive a few extra miles to the Holiday Inn.

It’s scary because you don’t know what you’ll do until you get there; everyone claims they would NEVER do that, I’m not so sure.

just crazy how we just can listen to this and be like. "yes people did that" and just go by our day.

Fun fact: Jim Bridger was one of the men that left the mountain man Hugh Glass behind after he was mauled by a grizzly bear, with the story being adapted into a book called The Revenant and eventually into the 2015 film with Leonardo DiCaprio.

I really enjoyed it. Having not only a detailed presentation of the story, but being given a wider context of the period and the trail they took allowed for a greater understanding of their situation and eventual causes of the tragedy.

This was such a sad story. I feel so bad for the hard decisions many of these people had to make and the lifetime of mental anguish they must have lived with.

I live out in the west and often think about the unimaginable hardships our ancestors endured, and then realize anything I am going through isn’t so bad.

Not sure if you’ve already covered this one, but the abandonment of Portlock, AK is a story I’d love to hear you cover here. It’s extremely creepy, especially the testimony of the Postmaster who had to stay behind to close down the Post Office after everyone else had left.

Really enjoyed just how detailed this was. Creepypasta stuff is great too, but the horrors of real life hit just so much harder, so I'm glad you've been doing these!

this is incredibly well done. Ive never heard such a detailed account of this story. There seemed to have been a lot more going on in different locations with different people than the basic story covers. I always assumed it was one wagon, and one family. I had no idea it was this many people, nor did i realize how many people went to help. It’s more reminiscent of modern day missing persons, which makes me feel more close to the time period this took place. Like, yes they didn’t have resources, but they absolutely cared about those people and wanted to get them out safely. Crazy stuff.

I've heard the story of the Donner party many times, in varying degrees of detail, but I never get tired of hearing it. Plus, I love your narration in all of your videos 😊

I think I'd like to hear more of these old-west tragedy stories that you've been covering, something about the real history of the stories is what makes it all the more creepy to listen to. Also I'm actually glad you covered the Donner Party story in such detail, it wasn't really something I heard about in school (at least not in such detail) and all I ever heard from people was just "Oh, stupid white people didn't listen to the Native Americans and went and got themselves stranded" when it was a lot more nuanced than that. So I definitely appreciate the coverage.

Loved the length of the vid! The more detail the better in my opinion, it really adds to immersion when listening to stories like this. Also, yes, please keep up with the creepypastas as well, you really know how to pick a story. I binged everything and not a single one bored me

My grandfather was one of the people who marked the Donnor Party Trail through the Sierras. Think it was during the 60’s or 70’s. I grew up with all this, but I hadn’t heard everything that your video covered so I thank you greatly.
