I think people somehow surviving the gallows is why the judges started sentencing folks to “Hang by the neck until you are dead”. Before this, if you were sentenced to hang, and you did, but somehow didn’t die, they were obligated to let you go. You were pronounce a sentence, and for all intent and purpose, you served your punishment. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Wow, that Half Hanged Smith guy sounded like a real class act. He survived being hanged for robbing houses after the crowd demanded a reprieve, then took him to a nearby house and helped him recover. And to show his gratitude he said, *"...I could've hanged the people who set me free"* and went right back to robbing houses. lol

Quite a few people survived the noose with a rather severe/permanent rope burn around their neck. A lot of the time the knot wasn't tied correctly (a slipknot), or the deadfall wasn't sufficient to sever the spinal cord. It was quite an art. The deadfall was adjusted based on weight and height. Once tied correctly, a slipknot would be used over and over again, and didn't need to be re-tied thanks to the ability to loosen the tension post mortem.
