Density and weight are 2 different things. Density is how close together things are smooshed. Weight is how much stuff there is. That's why when you weigh the lard it doesn't matter if it's solid or liquid.

If you have 10 ounces of solid lard that means it's a tighter little ball of stuff.

That same exact 10 ounces of lard melted hasn't gotten lighter, it just spread out like a fat cat on a sofa.

You can get lye cheap cheap cheap. Boil wood/ charcoal ashes with as little water as possible, strain it, and set it in the sun or keep it boiling until all the water evaporates. What's left is lye. It might be stronger than food grade, but the scent mixes with others well.

As long as its NOT tin or aluminum. You can only use plastic or glass containers.

All soap works by removing the bacteria and viruses, it doesn't necessarily kill them. The soap wraps them up in globules and washes them away. Now, Dial soap is the exception because they add an extra anti bacterial chemical. But that's not necessarily a good thing. Normal soap is 100% effective for getting clean and sanitary.

I'm 80 years old now and remember well my mother making soap with 'drippings' from bacon, spaghetti sauce, etc. The ones made with some spaghetti sauce was pink of course. At the time in 1948 it was financially a necessity.
