RETINOL IS BANNED - What You Need To Know (New EU Laws)

Sharing with you my thoughts on the new EU ban on retinol skincare containing more than 0.3% retinal and what this could mean for our skincare routine.

Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where in todays video we are talking the recent retinol ban implemented by the EU which restricts retinol serums to just 0.3% of the active ingredient.

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative and one of the best anti-aging ingredients for your skincare routine, it can smooth out lines and wrinkles and boost cell turnover. Retinol is however one of the most irritating ingredients in skincare which might be why the European Union has decided to restrict the amount which can be placed in anti aging serums.

In this video I want to share with you my thoughts on the new legislation and how this could impact out skincare routine in the future.

The good thing is there will be no restrictions on retinal which I think is a better option anyway so I would encourage people impacted to move to this form of vitamin a for better results and less irritation.

I would love to know your thoughts on this and how you will switch things in your routine so let me know in the comments below.

If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more like it then please let me know by giving it a thumbs up and a like.

Why don't they ban smoking, since it's just bad for the smokers, those around them and the environment? Instead, they ban retinol. Let's talk about hypocrisy 🤦🏻.

Hi Rob I think it's because most people don't use it right this has happened. I'm 51 and most of my friends buy "anti aging" products (the age group we're in lol). None of them read instructions on the packaging, wear spf daily, nor do they have any interest in how something works. INCI lists are a foreign concept and they use whatever is new or on offer, often picking it up amidst their supermarket shop. This type of consuming has probably caused a lot of issues when using retinoids, but it's due to misuse rather than the ingredient itself. We saw a similar thing with hydroquinone in the US not that long ago - misuse was the reason it was taken off general sale.
We're currently in the midst of a heatwave and I'm the only person I know wearing a high factor spf and practicing sun safe behaviours - everyone else is baking themselves to achieve a "fabulous" tan. The continuing myth that tanned skin looks healthier pervades our society still and people are baking their skin, then using over the counter retinoids and wondering why their skin is unhappy (misuse as stated).
It's unfortunate that those who were using these products safely and with good effect are being left unable to continue, just because so many people weren't using them properly. They're being penalised for others misuse and that's always a con to this type of legislation unfortunately. Governments are more about the majority than a subset of people and unfortunately it's the majority who are misusing the ingredient. I think everyone who watches beauty youtube forgets how poor the understanding amongst the vast majority actually is, but this is the reason and poor understanding does not make an ingredient unsafe for everyone. Best wishes.

Retinol can be used correctly but gets banned above 0.3 because of people who don't use it correctly. Cigarettes cannot be used correctly, they're only harmfull, yet you only see warning on the package. I think it would be nice to demand retinol product to have warning in visible spot on the package of potential skin cancer if not used corectly and added manual (like use adequate amout of SPF daily, how to build up tolerance gradualy).

Honestly, it’s bizarre how a bunch of people in Brussels decide for everyone else without asking. They have been trying to remove essential lavender oil (used for centuries in France), so their decisions are questionable at the least.

The EU’s new regulations regarding retinol are likely due to rising skin cancer rates throughout Europe, especially here in Scandinavia and Finland. Vitamin A derivatives are not just for acne anymore, and sun holidays are not only for the wealthy. Sun+retinoids=skin cancer in the EU’s sometimes limited way of thinking, and skin cancer=burden to the healthcare system, but in its own way the EU believes that’s less money towards EU funding and vanity projects. The EU has a purpose, but I do wish they would stop infringing on our ability to make decisions for ourselves. Those of us in the EU will order it from the UK and America anyway.

I'm in Britain so EU laws don't necessarily impinge on us anymore, and I have used retinol at night on and off for years, with no obvious side effects. However as someone who previously worked in the beauty industry, I would advise starting with the lowest dose, always at night, don't mix with other acids, and always use min SPF 30 in the daytime and a decent amount of it too.

In Brazil, the brands can't sell retinols with concentration above 0, 3% for a while now. It's been like that since I got to start doing skincare.

I was scared for a minute until I watched to the retinal section and I sighed with relief! Retinol is too weak for me so and tret is prescription-only in Germany so I'd been on Medik8 for ages now. I started with the Crystal 10, switched to their r-retinoate for a while but it's been out of stock for ever so I went back to Crystal 10. I'll 100% be trying your retinal Rob!

I never get tired of cutting the waffle with you.

On topic, this is pretty crazy. Pretty sure Retinal is the new it-girl anyway which will essentially make retinol obsolete as supply increases and prices fall.

In Canada, our latest legislation is seeking to highly regulate our supplement industry—meaning vitamins, etc, will have reduced ingredient potency. Our regulatory agencies seem very concerned about suppressing anything that competes with pharmaceuticals.

I agree with your view that retinal causes less irritation. Love the medik8. Thank you for keeping us updated on this issue! Looking forward to trying the oil you formulated in the cooler months! 🙌🏻

Wow what a news!! I absolutly didn't know or hear anything about that and i live in France. The only product that works for me is the P. Choice retinol 1%. It bothers me to find a new one and make probably unsuccessful purchases before finding the right one :'( Thank you so much for talking about it!!

I believe that as retinoids are more available it reduces the reason to see a derm. So maybe college of deems or medical beurocrars are putting pressure on the govt to restrict its availability

I live in Norway and we are not a part of EU, we still follow all they guidelines and laws, so I guess I have to follow your good advice and switch to retinal👍Thank you for sharing!

Love geek and gorgeous line and loving medik8, I learned about them on here, big thanks! Timeless is my other go-to for vitamin c and a few of their peptides, and of course I’m very loyal to the best products of the ordinary, esp the new cleanser and their peptide serums. Next I’m wanting to try the Mad About Skin line esp the sunscreen (so far I’ve only tried supergoop and really like it).

I agree - outside of pregnancy - retinol is pretty safe. Yes there can be irritation, dry skin, purging at the start but on the whole there are many benifits for acne, rosecea & anti-agjng tyat outweigh tte problems. Vitamin A derivates have been so extensively researched it seems a bit baffling.
