Nuances and complete information is definitely important because people run away with the idea that something is banned or restricted by the EU

I reckon it's because kids are using retinols way too young and they need to regulate it.

The EU is notorious for doing this. I mean they've banned jet fuel in skincare products which would seem like a no-brainer... So folks will just have to go and get a prescription and some people are just buying up as much OTC as they can before the ban goes into effect.

In Belgium the retinoids are prescription, acne indication only and it's a mixed formula with an antibiotic. We are decades behind the times.

But rather to protect pharmaceutical companies from losing any amount of the astronomical profits they make
That’s the truth.

If u can’t absorb retinol through skincare why is topical retinol banned during pregnancy?

Not relevant, but I find it silly she had to censor the word "cancer" 😅 I didn't know it was inappropriate

I find the long term implications of this new EU regulation really interesting: from 2025 onwards or correctly we should say 2026 (to sell remaining retinol products with higher than 0.3%), you won't be able to purchase retinol (with an "o") inside EU (online shops or local). The EU is one of the biggest markets for retinol and this will lead to cosmetics manufacturers to adapt: since this particular new regulation speaks of retinol and retinol-esters (like retinyl palmitate) obviously a EU citizen could still purchase retinaldehyd (with an "a"). The more concerning aspect, that which Dr. Dray didn't mention, is that not only retinol is being restricted but also retinyl esters. IF the EU lawmakers are cocky, this could technically include Granactive Retinoid (Hydroxypinacolon-Retinoat), too.

I'm curious what this will imply in the upcoming years.

I also think this is definitely due to ppl under 17 overdosing on topical actives.

rrrRight. This sounds like a Corporate Stunt to make sure that the chemical is more-easily and expensively commoditised.

Can you imagine women starting a contraband ring of retinol....😂

Europe has much more stringent guidelines with most everything. I think that’s a good thing.

Oh we address this but can’t get round to the important issues with the EUs state of disrepair in other areas. Shows what important things there focusing on 🙄

I think they'll find a way to bypass it, exactly the same way like they did with stuff with caffeine for underage people in Poland, you can't buy it if it's over 150mg/l, so there's so much of energy drinks with 140mg/l. So I think they will do products with 0.001% less retinol that will be forbidden to sell OTC if it ever happen. But I also heard mixed things, once that it might be about retinol, once that it might be about retinal, I think no one knows what they want, even the lawmakers, the companies didn't tell them yet 😂

It sounds like you can’t get an effective amount over-the-counter thus helping big pharma line their pockets even more.

I live in the EU and Differin for example, which I use, must be prescribed and it's also kinda pricey, around €35
