Microsoft Surface Laptop Teardown!

We’ve taken apart a lot of Microsoft Surface devices, and historically they haven't done very well on our repairability meter. The highest score we’ve seen is the Surface Studio’s 5 out of 10.  Today we have the new addition to the Surface line, The Surface Laptop. With it’s super slim form factor, 13.5 inch touchscreen, and fancy Alcantara lined keyboard, the Surface Laptop has truly piqued our interest. But where will it find itself on our repairability meter?

How wasteful. Computers were never meant to be discarded after the failure of a single part. If it gets wet or zapped in a power surge you can kiss data recovery goodbye. Troubleshooting to buy replacement parts, if they even exist, is now useless since you can't replace the parts yourself anyway.

Edit: Cleaning the fans and heat sink of dust, something that can't be avoided, is also a no-go.

Just did a hard drive repair on a hp elitebook 840 G2. Flipped it upside down, pushed the slider in and pushed the service panel toward the back and had instant access to all the important components.

I just swapped out the battery in my 2015 12 inch Macbook, it has a repairability score of 1, but it is still repairable. Only thing that was difficult to take out is the glued in battery. The Surface book is a 100% disposable computer that is truly wasteful and adds another degree of pollution, planned obsolescence is training a generation of young people that it's okay to throw away good hardware because the battery went bad. I'm still using my Macbook Pro from 2012, swapped out the battery and hard drive to a SSD it's still going strong in 2018!
