Microsoft’s line of Surface devices has never seemed to have repairability or longevity in mind.

The First Surface Laptop earned the lowest repairability score we can possibly give: a 0 out of 10 and the Surface Pro Line routinely scores a 1 out of 10.

But the newly released Surface Laptop 3 and the Surface Pro EX both showed some promising design changes. Is Microsoft finally starting to design their devices to last? We’re comparing our teardowns to find out.

All the tools you need to take apart your new Surface Laptop 3 or Surface Pro X

Modular CPU for laptop is not practical, the sockets are way too thick, motherboard chip set generally won't support newer generation CPU, and their socket are not standardized like desktop (since 5th gen).
The only usage is that when CPU gets fried (which almost never happened), you can swap it with exactly the same one.

If you still need a laptop with swap able CPU, why not get one of those with desktop CPU? Ultrabooks were not built for this.

low voltage cpus are always soldered to the board, 15-25 watts cpus always soldered... how do you suggest to have a modular cpu.... it is not H sereis or K series or... go tell intel and Amd not microsoft

Does AMD, Intel or other(ARM ?) even make anymore socketed mobile CPUs?

I agree with everything except the modular cpu. Have a fun time fitting an entire socket in a laptop.

Replaceble RAM, CPU and GPU ? Hahaha. No way they are ever going to implement that

"They made all of the repairability changes, while maintaning the same, or even slimmer form factor!"

Take notes Apple

Producing upgradeable ram increases the thickness..💻📏
And producing the user repairable machine reduces company's revenue💰

So I don't think that these companies will do so

There is problem of screen crack in surface laptop 3. There is a very thin (like hair width) gap between the
display and keyboard deck when it's closed because
Microsoft decided not to put any kind of rubber bumper
around the edges of the display. So, when you pick it up,
the screen flexes a little bit and is causing the crunching
noise, and can obviously crack the screen. I think it's a design
flaw .

Does seem some companies intentionally miss the point by requiring a genuine nic adaptor to reimage (microsoft) or custom ssd’s or hdds so you can only buy there parts to replace failures (apple)

expanded life span is count marketing idea, planned obedience so that you NEEED new things not WANT, the battery idea is KEEN :)

While I also love the idea of upgradable CPU and RAM, Microsoft's not gonna do it. From a business POV they won't be able to sell newer iterations of the Surface Laptops, etc.

Maybe it is too much too ask for removable CPU. I just hope that they did not overcharge for CPU/RAM/storage so that people can choose the right components from the start. This problem is more glaring for Apple, because they charge $400 for 16GB of RAM upgrade for MacBook Pro 16".

Intel haven’t make a socketed laptop cpu since Haswell was a thing. Also, ram socket takes up a lot of space.
I repairs laptops for a living and only once did I have a customer come in for a cpu upgrade for their laptop. It’s not common.
