This is why I quit my 6 figure job as a doctor, after 12 years of post-secondary schooling and a lot of debt, after realizing what was more important. I wanted to live my life, I wanted to live my dream. My goal was simple, travel to Taiwan and learn my parent's language, Chinese.

–––👋 About Me–––

Hi I'm Danyo.

I was born in Canada and spent 12+ years training and working as a medical doctor.

But in 2019 I burnt out, quit my job and traveled to Taiwan to learn Chinese in my 30s.

I went from struggling to say a sentence to having multi-hour conversations with locals in 6 months.

Getting conversational in Mandarin changed my life.

Now I help other 3500+ learners speak Mandarin with confidence using The Copy Paste Speak System.

On this channel I make videos and podcasts sharing tips, tools and lessons for language learners.

Man... I found your channel just at the right time. In a few weeks I'll be moving to China, I had/have the same inner calling as you. But now it's coming closer I'm getting more anxious. You sharing your story makes me feel more at ease and excited again haha. The fear of not knowing etc. is all part of it. Thanks for sharing :D happy to hear you feel at home where you are.

Found your YT via IG! I’m a family doc in California perpetually studying Chinese (“stuck” in intermediate level). We speak Teochew dialect at home. Lived in Kunming for 3 months. Wish I could try Taiwan too, but will live vicariously through you. You are right, you will always have clinical work when you’re ready to come back to it. Live large when you can. Good luck with your travels and language learning expedition!

Hi Dan, you are so wise to listen to your "inner voice" and explore life on your own terms. So happy to follow you on your journey ! :)

Thanks for sharing.

Things I'm curious about was: 1) how you budgeted to move all the way to the other side of the world, 2) if you're learning any medical terms so that you could potentially serve Mandarin/Cantonese speaking patients when you're back in Canada? 3) if you're getting involved with citizen science at all in Taiwan (since you've got a STEM background)?

Best of luck to you!

Thank you for sharing this! I am a med student in Taipei and am going to California for the gap year! I am also planning to learn Spanish in Central America after my study in US. How long do you plan to stay in Taiwan to learn Mandarin?

I’m Canadian too, how long are you staying in Taiwan? I’ve been before and really love it there. Is there a school you study at?

@Dan Yo aspects of your story (your journey) reminds me of YouTuber @Aleese Lightyear…although she’s female. Both of you are from the West & now living in the East.
