T-72B3 side Kontakt-5 vs APFSDS | OFL-105-F3 | Armor Penetration Simulation

Показать описание
Simulation of a AMX-10 RC projectile hitting hull side armor (Kontakt-5 area) of T-72B3

105mm OFL-105-F3 APFSDS (~2.1 kg tungsten alloy penetrator) at 1350 m/s

vs

T-72B3 hull side armor at 63 degrees:

Kontakt-5 (17mm HHA)
+
80mm semi hardened RHA

105mm F2 gun muzzle velocity (OFL-105-F3) - 1400m/s. 1350 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 0.7 km.

*Semi Hardened Armor (+400 BHN)

Kinda figured, the AMX-10RC has a lower pressure gun, therefore due to the decreased speed the ERA has more of an effect on the Penetrator.
If that was a full pressure gun, something like an L7 it would have just blasted straight through with a lot less disruption and penetrated the side armor.

This is a record, 190 hours of computation time.

Amazing how the combination of ERA and the huge gap allowed the penetrator to rotate and hit the main armour sideways!
Looks like I was correct on my prediction afterall.
Nice simulation as usual!

Thank you for this simulation. I think it perfectly shows how K5 ERA is meant to work, despite the fact that in real life the process is much more complicated. You've done an impressive work

haha t72 is such a cool tank looking back at its total line span. it’s fought on all continents for like 50 years now lmao. such an icon. i wish it could just be retired and in a museum where it belongs. it’s legacy will be felt forever, regardless of opinions. thanks for the video, cool stuff bro!!

Very interesting. Now I am curious if a old fashioned heavy, full caliber AP/APHE shell would have performed better in this specific instance. Given that it should probably be effected less by the ERA due to inertia. If the ERA doesn't just blow up the projectile, that is :D

Best presentation of ERA armour effect. Just a "slight" tilt, but enough to save a tank

Angular deflection is the bread and butter of Russian ERA of this type, I really want to see the shape charge Malachit style ERA that "cuts" the rod if thats possible.

Love the work you do.

this simulation must've taken extra time with all the elements, thanks for the sim, really interesting to see

Damn, my prediction was sort of accurate in the end result but not for the right reasons. I didn't think the ERA would rotate the whole round in such a way that it would be almost parallel to the armor. And the tip being blown off or the shattering of the penetrator wasn't clearly as significant as I thought it would be.
Nice one :)

Would be curious to see this same sim with a modern L7 105 dart round

So the combination of era and spacing make the rod impact at virtually horizontal?
Is it possible to predict the velocity limit or rod length (provides same dimension and material, just increase mid section length).

I lol'd at the first half not realizing how far away the ERA is from the side hull (mounted on track guards)

I am quite impressed actually
I did not expect Kontakt do weaken the projectlile to such extent

"WE BARELY EVEN SCRATCHED THEM" guess the game.

I'm curious to see this compared to an identical armor array, but wit the explosive elements absent.

No surprise here to be honest. 105mm APFSDS encountering ERA designed to noticeable degrade 120mm APFSDS, not surprised to see it hit sideways and do nothing

I am curious to see how much the angle needs to be decreased before the OFL-105-F3 is able to penetrate the side armour.

Can you pls make Something similar to nosh 2 reactive Armor on the t84 bm oplot? It has two layers of explosive and should be very effectice against any projectile.
