120mm DM33 APFSDS (Leopard 2A4) vs T-72B with Kontakt-5 ERA - Simulation

This simulation demonstrates well how and why reactive armor excels at protecting vehicles against kinetic energy penetrators.

Without ERA, the DM33 projectile was almost able to penetrate the whole armor, whereas with Kontakt-5, the black plate was barely reached.

This shows us how ERA itself cannot stop a kinetic round but can decrease its effectiveness. The ERA did a wonderful Job destabilising the round and fracturing it at various points in its length. This causes a minor increase of the cavity and the round being somewhat of the target meaning it cannot perforate the plate. The effectiveness of the Penerator is reduced to due to the fracturing and fragmentation.

Kontakt 1 wasn`t designed to combat FIn rounds, hence the fly plates are not dense enough, it was designed against HEAT

Why did you stop the animation of the simulation without letting the arrow finish its trajectory? it is not clear if using the ERA armor the ammunition will not penetrate the frontal armor, it would be good if you could upload it again, but this time complete ;)

And then there is reallife tests that have shown that era(otherwise we would have different projectiles) does not prevent penetration from a4s penetrators odd isn't it?

Video is incorrect. Whole point of K5 hull package is that activation violently yeets thick outer armor plate up, clamping on the rod and violently displacing it. Acceptable case scenario is hitting the bottom part of a section, which merely results in shatter, which costs about a third of effective pen. The best case scenario is grazing the top of the section, which displaces the rod onto second section or into the turret/air, resulting in massive material loss and negligible damage to armor.
Worst case, however, is rod being redirected into driver port by hitting the top part of driver port adjacent top ERA section. To minimize the chances of this occasion happening, top section of K5 package is trimmed and designed to swing upon activation, clamping on rod unevenly, attempting to redirrect it DOWN and hopefully shatter it by bending. This provides randomized results. If rod is built to specs and fail to shatter, performance drops to 9-13%, if it shatters, about a quarter of pen is lost. The rest, however, might still get "tested" against the "weak spot" which will result in "significant emotional event" for the driver if we talk about longer, heavier rods.

Do one with Dm 53 or Dm 63. Kontakt 5 is very new, it should meet a new round out of the longer L55 barell
