CV90 vs T-72 | Swedish 40mm APFSDS vs Main Battle Tank | Armour Penetration Simulation

preview_player
Показать описание
The Swedish CV9040 infantry fighting vehicle features the 40mm Bofors L/70 automatic cannon, capable of firing APFSDS projectiles. The simulation presents one of these projectiles impacting the side armour of a T-72 (without ERA), at 65° -as if the T-72 was angled at 25° from head-on, at ~200m.

The T-72's side armour has been modelled with a hardness of 300BHN and it should be noted that many modernised variants have heavy ERA on ths side, which is effective against APFSDS projectiles. However, as the CV90 fires 5 rounds per second, there's a good chance that at close range, a previous shot could trigger the ERA, clearing the path for a subsequent one.

Apologies for the delayed upload and reduced replies lately, things outside of Youtube have been too busy but I'll still try to get a video out at least once every couple of weeks. Thank you all for your ongoing support and input!

Hits the ammo, goes straight through, and turns it red. Welcome to top tier

I love how the 40mm bofors is right up there with the .50 cal as some of the longest serving weaponry in the world.

0:59 _looks over at the 5-round burst button_

*”It’s a surprise tool that’ll help us later!”*

0:53 except it doesn't matter if they have ERA as the 40mm bofors is fully automatic so while the first hit might not do much the fact that you're firing 5-10 rounds will probably work.

Could you simulate the 3P ammunition hitting a BMP3 with its AP mode, or an Airburst of it against MTLB or BMP targets ?

The heavy ERA thing is correct and will effectivly stop the 40mm apfsds but because its an autocannon the era can only stop a single shot

AFAIK the 40mm gun is extremly accurate, basically shoots hole in hole for quite some range dramatically increasing the probability of penetration as it can penetrate up to 60mm RHS (please do correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I've read at least).

In a way the CV90 mirror the development of the WW2 Tiger. Both were equipped with what was initially a successful anti-aircraft gun.

With all the Drones and FPV Drones now making life difficult the CV 90 is probably one of the most survivable vehicles on the modern battlefield. Interestingly a 30 to 40mm armed vehicle with facilities to launch and guide FPV drones and the sensors to defeat the same could be a game changer. Able to command large sections of the battlespace above and around them.

@SY Simulations You should know that even the "plain" steel used in tanks made in the last 40 years or so, is significantly stronger than WW2 stuff. I would not be surprised if this 80mm plate was equivalent to a 100mm one against subcaliber shells impacting at high obliquity.

i heard during WWI soldiers pulled out bullet from casing and put it the other way around so the flat end is first to touch target. Apparently this was penetrating tanks at the time better, could you make simulation on that?

Impressive penetration for such a small caliber dart- compared to MBT guns anyways.

So the 40mm apfsds should have around 200mm of pen?

80mm plate at 65 should be 190mm thick

In that case, this baby will shred all modern tanks from the side, since T-72 has probably the thickest hull walls in the business. Abrams and Leo-2 tanks for instance don't reach even 50mm in hull wall thickness.

It makes sense that tactics would have been developed to counter the ERA. I can imagine hosing down such an equipped tank with HE follow up with a couple APFSDS rounds.

this is how many times you need to burn in the cv90 to get close to the tank at 200 m

Can you simulate penetrating the track, roadwheel, and armor from a shallow angle? Alternatively, only the roadwheel and then the armor at a steeper angle.

The Begleitpanzer 57 Also had an Apdsfs available, how would it be, if it would have went into production?

Seems like SB PRO PE simulation was right, in SB PRO PE those rounds tend to penetrate T-72M from the side with no problem.
