My favorits for being aero:
1. Position
2. Suit
3. Helmet
4. Wheels
5. Legs shaved
6. Aerobar
7. Velotoze

My favorits for being light:
1. Have a poo
2. Dont carry more stuff than needed
3. Get a rimbrake bike 😉

If you want bragging rights at the coffee shop ride a down tube shifter bike. My Raleigh competition (1982) gets a bigger crowd than any carbon aero disc bike.

I fitted a one piece BBinfinite bottom bracket as a replacement for a cheap Sram press fit. Swapped out the jockey wheels for slight larger BBinfinite ones and fitted a waxed chain, and new aero wheels. Two things happened 1. I really did feel a difference. 2. it only felt better because of the placebo effect.

Geometry of a bike is very important, it's change the riding experience more than aero or lightweight (personnal opinion). You make great videos

I have two road bikes and also a TT bike. Of my two road bikes I prefer riding the lightest one most. It just feels better and more responsive. An aero bike may save 10-15s over 40k but it doesn't make the bike feel nicer to ride which is the most important thing. Many professional riders opt for the lightweight over aero bikes if their sponsor has both available too. Dumoulin always chose the TCR over the Propel.

Totally agree with your summary. If I ever get to place I can afford one of the high end bikes I'd go for one that was at least reasonably lightweight with enough of a nod to aero. That way my head will be satisfied that aero wise it's good enough and my heart will be happy as the bike will "feel" snappy. In reality as you say, your position, and more importantly, the position you can hold for the duration of rides you're doing, will determine how fast you can go for the power you have!

To be very honest Wayne, Cam Nichols tested a Cannondale system six against the super six....he found that yes the aero bike climbed really well, and was the bike to use on a group ride, but the super six was just easier to live with every day and was only a bit slower, hence if pushed he chose the super six.I am 86 kilo similar age to you and i have an aero bike for chain gangs and fast rides and the look 695 for climbing days this works well for me! Loving your content too ....

Lightweight for rolling/hill races. Aero for flat races and all round training. Also aero looks better.

Love your content Wayne!
I’ve picked up a HSC bottom bracket to convert a BB30A to Shimano 24mm on a CAAD12 for racing. I was not really after ceramic bearings but HSC was fairly priced so I thought was worth giving this one a go.

I see a lot of guys around here with fancy aero bikes and they only ride in the hoods. Go wonder.

rim brakes cheaper lighter! lesser spokes more aero. win win

In my opinion it's neither aero or lightweight that matters most. It's stiffness. You can't feel aero, or lightweight, but you notice a high buttombracket stiffness right away you are standing in the pedals and accelerate, both in a Sprint and on a climb.

hey wayno have a friend who has a bike shop. was looking in the back and low and behold found a set of 2001 shamal"s. the last of them with the black rim and tubular. naca profile, stainless steel bladed spokes, 14 front 16 rear and hidden nipples. put some 22mm continental 4000 grand prix tubulars on them. now these were no lightweight wheels. but are amazingly light compared to my friends top of range carbon disc brake wheels. and nothing gives a bike the wow factor when a lightweight racing bike is picked up. best wishes mate

I always ride lightweight frame. Frame drag is so marginal, it doesn't make a difference. The bike is also more diverse as you can make it super light or aerodynamic with wheels.

Have to agree, I’m a light rider at 53 kilos, I don’t make massive power, 900 watts maximum on a good day 😊, I have a Bianchi Specialissima rim brake on campag Bora 50 tubulars, and an Oltre aero bike, on a flat road I’m no faster at all on the aero bike than I am on the Specialissima, but when it comes to climbing the 6.2 kilo Specialissima climbs faster than the 7.3 kilo Oltre.
In my opinion just wear race fitting clothing and train to ride on the drops all day for Aero, perhaps a rider who is a big powerhouse might find more of a difference on an Aero bike though 🤔

I've got a bit of aero, and some light weight, massively stiff aluminium hydro formed extensively frame track bike. 16 bladed spoke front wheel.
Water bottles behind the seatpost. 110 kg rider. 42mm bars to get up hills. This one feels great riding uphill. It has a front brake but is seldom used. Done 18 downhill runs in 3 different positions and now know the 2 that work for me. The 3rd and slowest gets used at 48 kph and Jersey is open to maintain control!

On my kind of sportif riding comfort and weight are at the top of the list. Our uk roads are badly maintained and full of holes in the summer and gravel and flints in the winter. I have succumbed to better wheels but then added the weight back on the bike with a top tube bag for snacks. Comfy bars and saddle Wins.

Light weight bikes are nice. But with a recent early diagnoses of diabetes type 2. I found out that changing my eating diet has been able to put out more physical energy of a get up and go for a relative long hard ride that to me beats out any aero marketing gimmick that some big brands like giant, trek and so on. They don't want to tell you this because they need to sell the latest bicycle style of the year or maybe of the several recent months. Bike fit is important too. I don't wear fancy tight racing clothes. Only specific cycling shorts and shoes and a helmet. A must!

I mostly ride solo so an aero bike makes total sense.. but I ride in a hilly area and I'm constantly climbing every ride. My Aero vs light predicament is a never ending circle between the two 🤦.
