Aero vs Endurance vs Lightweight Road Bikes Explained

We break down the differences between the three types of road bikes: Aero, lightweight and endurance.

To help highlight the differences in each bike, Trek provided us with the 2017 Madone 9.2, Emonda SLR 6, and Domane SLR 6 Disc. All are a 56cm frame and have a Shimano Ultegra mechanical groupset.

A more in-depth look is available on site.

Endurance for Long rides
Aero for Races and speed
Lightweight for climbing

Also don't forget the riders weight. A light weight bike and an overweight rider defeats the purpose of the bike.
An endurance bike is better for the overweight rider he can ride longer and so burn more calories :)

I just realized that the name of those 3 bikes are anagrams of each other

I ride my endurance bike 90% of the time. My aero bike isn't comfortable and my lightweight bike is "too light" for me. The aero and lightweight bike are both faster; however, I find myself fatiguing quicker on them. I can finish stronger on my endurance bike, which seemingly makes up for the weight differential.

I think most people would be better off getting two bikes. A good XC-hard tail 29" mountain bike and a good racing-bike. In combo you are covered all year round and on all roads and most styles of riding. The mountain bike can go mountain/forest riding AND with slick tires and locked suspension it can go pretty fast in a comfortable riding position and be your bike of choice during the winter months while your race bike can offer pure speed and road excitement. Actually for most people I would personally recommend a good XC mountain bike if you can only afford one bike.

Endurance bike. Add some weight ( 2 x 1 litre bottles ). F = mass x Accel. Once you are going, it takes more to slow you down.
When you are really light, it only takes a gentle breeze to blow you backwards.

Man, I could transform that red Trek into a work of art. Sure, it's sweet as is, but it could be so much more.

>The best solution is to just get all three

Wow, thanks, I never would have thought of that. I'll just go out and do that with the maybe $800 I have saved.

Seriously, though, good video. It was very informative, detailed without being boring. I'm just salty about being broke.
