Olaf Scholz is in Washington for his first trip as Germany's Chancellor. In his meeting with US President Joe Biden, Scholz is keen to present a common front on the Ukraine crisis and keep relations smooth – Germany has just taken over the G7 presidency. In the runup to the meeting, Scholz said that Germany is the strongest economic supporter of Ukraine.
The leaders will discuss sanctions against Russia if it invades Ukraine, for example possible penalties on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline - which is to deliver Russian gas to Germany - bypassing countries like Poland or Ukraine. The two leaders will also talk about bilateral relations and ways of fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

I like how Europeans choose to ignore the fact that the US while calling for sanctions, continues to buy Russian oil. The EU countries appear to have accepted the don't ask, but do as we say position with the US. It's not only hypocritical, but short sighted also.

Getting USA out of Europe would be much wiser
USA started war in Ukraina in 2014

The funny thing is that it was Germany that suggested and initiated the Nord Stream 2 project since it’s extremely beneficial for them in the first place.

When Northstream2 gets scrapped Northstream1 will still operate and then America will build Weststream One but Mexico will pay for it.

It will hurt Germany the same way, German people will pay 4 times the cost of the Russian gas if they switch to the stored LPG gas..

It's always a great price to pay as long as it's not you who's paying. This is why Germany is hesitant to pay the price with Nord Stream 2 while the US sees it's all benefits

No, Germany will not scrap Nord Stream 2. If it does, Nord Stream 1 may also be closed by Russia. There are many other clients willing to replace Germany at the price they are paying the gas.

You can't have a 'purely commercial' deal with a nation like Russia. Or China.

US never want EU independent in neither military nor energy, they need EU to be a sidekick not a competitor.

Nord stream 2 is necessary for Germany and other European countries.

I think European companies should also consider moving their operations away from Russia!

If they scrap it they going to pay penalties as they will end up in court definately. It was the Germans that begged for this pipeline, to scrap it would make them unreliable partners.

It's interesting how all at once forgot that half of the investment in NS2 were made by European business, and by sanctioning NS2 EU suffer too... It's like kind of BDSM...

Why would Germany end their Agreement with Russia? The United States should focus on the many domestic problems they are facing. The United States is envious of the Russian Agreement with Germany 🤔

There are legal implications for shutting down the project after its completion, and probably clauses to kick in if its opening is not approved beyond a reasonable time frame. A bit like France's failure to deliver the two Minstrel Carriers to Russia, they were taken to Court and forced to return the complete sum paid in advance plus heavy compensation.
