How to Do Double Hip Locks | Belly Dancing

Belly dancing is sexy, fun, and burns up a lot of calories to boot! In this video, belly dancer Irina Akulenko teaches you how to do double hip locks. You'll be shaking it like Shakira in no time.

So now we're going to go over the basic double hip lock. Come back to your neutral, bent knee position, chest lifted. And you're going to straighten one knee to lift that hip up, release it back down, and lock it up, one more time, and release. So it's the two accents on the same side. Now we're going to transition to the other side. Lifting the left hip up by straightening the left knee, releasing back down, and one more time contracting in and release. And switch. Right, right, left, left, right, right, left, left.

And once again you want to make sure you're not bouncing in space so your head is staying in exactly the same position, chest is lifted, nothing else is moving, except for those hips. And again, let's try that with music.

In the beginning you might want to shift your weight entirely to that leg, to find that isolation. So a little bit bigger. Lets try it faster.

Keep the hands relaxed, lots of energy in the fingertips, chest lifted. And faster.

And now pull it in, and keep it right underneath your ribcage so that you're not shifting your weight from side to side. Right, Left.

Heels stay down no matter what, the weight is in between the forward part of your foot and the heel.

And a little bit faster.

That's how you lift your hips and do a double hip lock.

DISCLAIMER: this is a practice that requires very specific isolation/muscle use that ya'll have probably NEVER used before. Before you get angry at yourself remember that belly dancing, like ballet, or running, or singing, or even playing an instrument, its all the same concept: practicing. your muscles need CONSISTENT reinforcement to be able to do something (and belly dancing is specifically something I think most people have never even attempted to get their bodies to do); but just follow along with this video or a different one twice a day or more in a month i bet you'll see some improvement, and who knows maybe in a year u could be significantly better. DONT QUIT its practice!

It's when she does it full speed I just go cry in a corner. That will take a lot of time, coordination and strength to do that.

Hip accents are so useful! You can use them in classic, folk, drum solo and belly dance show style!

It IS hard!! But it gets easier as you practice and you build the muscle memory. And then it actually feels great :)

How does your hip go up without lufting your heel or foot? My body does not do this.

@yolo602 There's much, much more to bellydance than just "moving the bootie." Bellydance is comprised of various folk dances of the Middle East. The music is paramount to this dance, because not only should a dancer be able to layer complicated moves together, he or she should also be able to interpret the music. It's not a "hootchie-kootchi" dance.
