Do I leave the case open or closed in order for it to update?

My unused airpods pro 1 with replacement case is on 5B58. It got connectivity issues doesn’t connect to my iphone 12(air pods and case acts like different devices and shows 2 names in bluetooth settings. Nothing works to update firmware version. How do i use now.

I bought 3rd Gen AirPods around 3 months ago and I don’t know how to get them to update. They are on Version 4B66 and I’ve tried everything to update them. Does anyone know what I can do? I’ve also upgraded from an iPhone XR to an iPhone 13 Pro Max and I’ve reset the AirPods and everything, but they won’t update. If it also helps I’ve still got warranty, but it expires this month
