What if Sports Cars Required a Special License..

I was recently reading up on special driver's licensing becoming a normal thing, especially as cars get more powerful and it got me thinking "Do higher horsepower cars result in more accidents?" So in today's video we talk a little bit about it, some facts and figures that would make Doug Demuro shake his knees, and just try to figure out if this should really be a thing.

I could seriously go for some subs & follow right about meow, so see the links below:

I will be posting on Monday & Thursday's at 12PM CST. The streaming channel will be going live on Tuesday's and Fridays at 3PM CST.

I can just imagine the federal or state governments trying to define what a "high performance car" is, and doing so as smoothly as legislators or the ATF trying to define "fully semi automatic military style assault weapons."

If this ever plays out, it'll be amusing to watch.

As good of an idea that I think this could be I think it would be hard to make it work since it would be hard to test someone’s ability to control a powerful car. As well as most people would probably just drive more carefully during their test then they do on the road.

Not unless they're going to give you a license that allows you to legally drive over the speed limit... Plus the insurance cost is already the disincentive

Great video topic. I like your content here more than I did on FI, I think exclusively because of the topics you choose.

I've been wanting progressive licenses ever since I started bingeing the EverydayDriver podcast. I think renewals are a good first step because, at least in my mind, it may help reverse bad habits drivers develop if they have to take periodic renewal tests that reinforce the rules of the road.

I also think that a graduated license could come with the added benefits of not just the ability to drive more powerful cars, but drive them faster. Think autobahn lane for people who have the right kind of permit.

That shit ain't happening, but if it was on a ballot I'd vote for it.

I've got a motorcycle endorsement and that means I can go get a machine with a power to weight ratio better than most vehicles in the world. My insurance thinks I'm safer as a result and gives me a lower rate. I think there should be a similar option for higher performance vehicles, and it should reflect positively on your profile as a driver. One could even argue we just simply need to improve our driver training system as a whole and we'd probably see less crashes.

Lots of countries have power to weight learner limits for motorbikes (UK, NZ etc) and over here seniors get tested at something like 65, 70, 75, 80 then every 2 years

Higher annual registration costs for high horsepower cars with the option to drop down to the base rate by completing a performance driving course

This question needs to be broken up in different sections (these are just my opinions):
1: The age, below 20 I feel you should not be able to get a drivers license. Period.
2: Drivers licenses in general should be increased in difficulty (USA and Italy spring particularly to mind). Vehicle control should be part of the license requirements.
3: Yes, everything above 200hp should require a license. Based on vehicle control (not rules of the road) and should be redone every 5 years.

In the Netherlands there are 2 interesting things: After the age of 70 people need a medical every 5 years. Also motorbikes are limited. <11KW from 18, <35 KW from 20 >35KW from 24 (unless you had a lighter bike before it).

what about a car control course if you own a vehicle with more than 4 or 500hp you are required by law to take lessons on car control and driver awareness once every 4-6 years of ownership of a vehicle of that level

Yes people should be tested way more often, but even aside from that, the initial test should be thousands of times harder. To get my license all I had to do was drive around a couple blocks and pull into a parking lot. It was laughably easy.

I don’t think this would work. Because you could just take an old car and make the same amount of power as a hellcat

I would love for there to be special licenses for sports/super/hypercars. basically if a car exceeds a certain power/weight ratio, or just horsepower outright, that car requires a certain license to drive it. part of yearly car inspection programs would be to put any sort of modified cars on a dyno to measure their power.
the issues I could see are people maybe building their cars to pull a VW: basically have an 'inspection mode' where the motor gets detuned massively to sneak in under a different license class.

There are multiple lawas in my country for this.

Firstly, anyone that has recently passed a drivers license test cannot drive a car with more that 80kW (around 107hp) for the first 2 years (there is an exception for when the person has a family member with more than 5 years of experience riding along with them).

Another thing that affects drivers with high horsepower cars is car insurance and registration costs. The higher the hp number, engine displacement and build year, the higher the cost of the insurance and registration it will be.

Although I don't like that I'm limited to which cars I can drive (and I think a 100hp is way too low), and that the price increases are ridiculously high for things like a difference of the cars build year, I thing it should be applied (although it needs some adjustments) since it does prevent some people from causing bigger accidents and even deaths.

i like the idea of driver class levels.
Have driving tests for hp classes up to 200, 400, 600, 800, and unlimited all being the same cost to take, same actual test and this time including emergency manuver test, but requiring higher scores to pass for each class. A person's test score is their lisence class and so is valid to register a street-use vehicle's lisence plate for a car that comes factory up to the aforementioned hp range. if you modify your car, thats not recalculated unless you do an engine swap.
this means you still only do 1 test, and it just depends on how good you are at driving that gives you a higher or lower score

They do it with bikes and it kinda really makes sense
Like maybe over a certain power to weight ratio you gotta go to a advanced driving course or some type of course that prepares you

You could just do the L and P plate system we have here in Australia

There should definitely be more rigid guidelines to getting a license. There aren't enough young drivers that care about the other users of the road that barely pass the drivers test, because of this you get (as you said in the past) pretentious drivers that think they're the be all and end all of driving when they're not. The same could be said about older people, it should have the same weight as a court date to get a required yearly (or bi-yearly) test so we can make sure that we have cognitive people on the roads. Yes, we should have required licences for higher HP/TQ output cars. And no it's not "freedom", it's a privilege that you earn.

I think these massive heavy weight SUVs should.

I think it's a good idea, for drivers to be licensed if they're driving a high performance car. It needs to be regulated. In certain jobs you have to be tested or check in order to qualify for hire. There's a lot of idiots on the road that are not disciplined and are causing problems.
