A question about windows 7 system restore, Using a restore point, if my system has become unbootable, can I still restore it with a restore point or would I need to have made a system image ?

recently i have started to get 'bad image' errors when my PC loads and when i open any .exe programs (like chrome), i was wondering is this a way to stop it or do i have to do anything else. Please can you help me by giving me some tips, any help would be appreciated. Thanks
