The benefits of food in cans: safe, nutritious and sustainable

When looking for healthy and nutritional food many of us will go straight to the isle with fresh produce. Yet, canned food should be considered as an alternative.

Cans act as an extension of nature, ensuring harvests are preserved longer than any other packaging, thus reducing food waste. We currently waste up to half of the food we produce, either during production, transport, in shops or at home in our cupboards and fridges. Canned food can be stored for a very long time and is available in many portion sizes.

Also, canned food is generally packed very close to where it is farmed and does not spend days in transit. For example, canned fruits and vegetables are harvested at their peak of ripeness, when nutrient levels are at their highest and are canned in as little as four hours.

The high-heat canning process is one of the safest when it comes to preserving food. The high temperatures of retort cooking sterilise food inside the cans, securing nutrients, without the need for preservatives or refrigeration.

We all know that fruit and vegetables are key to a healthy diet and cans are the perfect way to store nutrients and have them available for a long time. Have a look at the video below that further explains why.
