A Vista couple has been conned out of nearly $50,000 in an all-too-common bank scam hitting customers around the state. The couple’s hard-earned money, wired out of their small business accounts at Chase Bank.

Kristal Kuhn received the call on February 15 from a telephone spoofed to look like it came from Chase Bank.

“She asked me if I had purchased something at Walmart for $2,043. I said no,” said Kuhn, who said the caller knew her debit card number and some of her recent transactions.

“They needed to send me an access code in order to verify my identity,” Kuhn said.

Unfortunately, Khun did give the scammer her texted code. She was then put on hold. “It was like five minutes. And then it was like 10 minutes. And I said to my daughter, ‘This has been a little while,’” said Kuhn.

That’s when Kuhn opened her bank app and saw tens of thousands of dollars being transferred between her accounts. She hung up and immediately called the Chase Bank fraud line, and drove to the closest Chase branch in Carlsbad.

Chase will NEVER call you! Don't people know that? Banks don't care. If someone from your bank calls, it's a scam.

The fact she had to go to three different towns and branches just to get services is a actual joke. Chase bank needs to he more customer oriented. They worry more about bank fees and tmover draft fees and all these fees but tbey cant make sure to actually help a customer with an emergency. A new client can wait for someone whos activly a customer. Pathetic chase bank

With all due respect, what’s wrong with these people? Banks will never ever call you, period.

Chase customer service is abysmal. They continue to debit for a safety deposit box that was emptied and closed two years ago when the owner died. The estate executor who was also listed on the account requested it be closed; Chase refused the keys, said the box would be drilled and emptied (we told them it was already empty and here are the keys) and they finally agreed to close it since they’re not issuing them anymore. Today I got a letter dated two months ago stating they were debiting for another year’s box rental. They’re stealing from the estate. Horrible excuse for a bank.

Ok but she could have just called chase or went online and locked all her accounts. Chase never calls you or emails you directly.

This guy does more to prevent and stop online scammers than the FBI. Not only are you closing the way for scammers, but also educating the public and making them aware. Well done *VAULT GUARD EXPERT*

*VAULT GUARD EXPERT* I'm relieved that you're out there fighting these thugs. We must take all precautions to protect the elderly and the general public from these despicable scammers.
