Ranking Jane Austen Side Characters

I can't believe that I forgot to add Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner (Pride & Prejudice)! They would both be in my top three for sure! They are both courteous and intelligent, and they do everything they can for their nieces, the Bennet sisters. I'm so disappointed in myself for forgetting to add them to my list!

Loved this! That's so true that Charles Musgrove would have been so much happier with Anne 😭

Fun list! It's interesting how the 3 couples (Westons, Crofts and Gardiners) all are wonderful as couples and as individuals. I'm glad Austen put these successful marriages in her novels. I dislike Mrs Bennet a LOT, but I have to admit that by the end of the book, 3 of her daughters are married, so she would consider herself successful...although no thanks to her!

Oh dear - such a lot to think about.! The actors who portrayed Mr Weston and Col. Fitzwilliam in the BBC 1995 mini series were SO GOOD - very warm and friendly personalities - that it has influenced me to like them very much! I would be an admirer of Harriet Smith too. It is interesting to read Emma say that she wanted to improve Harriet but Harriet had shown her what a truly good person should be! Unfortunately she has not been well represented by the actresses that I have seen play her. JA describes Harriet has very pretty - beautiful I think - and petite. Well I might have that wrong but it has always struck me that they are nothing like the Harriet in the books!

I think Mrs. Bennet is frustrated with her husband and daughters, and I think her "my nerves" comes from a place of not knowing how to get her husband to listen to her.  Like it's her way to get attention. She could also a hypochondriac. With Mr. Bennet, I wonder if he just gave up, because he was so dissatisfied with his marriage, and Lizzie was the only who took after him, his equal.
