Taking eggs from a female sturgeon could help save the species

Biologists with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, US Fish & Wildlife, and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe harvest sturgeon eggs every year in Massena, NY. Lake sturgeon are a threatened species in 19 states.

I had always wondered why they didn't do this. Imho it seemed stupid to kill the fish to get the eggs. We harvest eggs from other fish this way it is counter-productive to produce caviar by killing the fish.
