Volkswagen Jetta Secondary Air Injection Diagnosis Part 9 (DIY Diagnosis on Car)

Okay guys, here is the first part of the actual diagnostics on the car. Since the original video was so long which includes a lot of technical tips, procedures, etc. I had to break it up into several parts. In this video, I discuss the electrical diagrams of how I'm going to tap into the electrical wiring to troubleshoot the system, and I take you right along with me, step-by-step. This way you can understand my thinking process, and I encourage you to think about how you would troubleshoot this system. Along the way, I energize the secondary air injection and intake manifold change-over solenoid valves to verify the electrical integrity of the valves. Then the internal valve system of the solenoids are checked to verify its operation. There is a discussion of the venting system that all solenoid valves have and if you understand this, you will understand all of them, 2-way, 3-way, etc., even industrial solenoids as they all work alike. Enjoy the video and feel free to post your comments and questions!

Surprisingly, all of the items that I ordered online said "Made in the USA". What a surprise that was! However, the only part so far that I couldn't get online was that spider nest of hoses and fittings that I had to get from the local VW dealership. On the packaging, it said, "Made in Germany". What another surprise! Thanks for the compliment Joe, and you're right, this is really starting to be a job putting these videos together. Glad you enjoyed it!

Yep, you are correct about the pricing thing. When I have to go to the dealership, I usually start "buddying up" with the parts guy, hoping that I've made a "connection" with him while he's looking up the part. Most of the time, I get the business price, and it works most of the time. In the past, I've thought about how much a car would cost if you bought all the parts individually. Then I realized, I would never have that much money. Probably 100 times or more. Thanks for watching!

Hi stuzman52, I need to change my vacuum hoses that you replaced and covered with a blue cover seen at 4:30 What are the lines specifically called so I can try to find them online. Thanks!

So the secondary air solenoid valve is good? If so then the two solenoids are a different design. Your videos are very good. Lots of detail and easy to follow.
Will be using them on a 2003 Passat 1.8T. P0441. Scanner says check combi valve
and VW manual says check Purge valve (N80). Already replaced this last year.
Just replaced MAFS for the second time in a year also. Getting cheap parts off Ebay can have it's draw backs.

Hi Terry
I am curious to know when the brake booster line is busted like the one you replaced ( with resultant big vacuum leak), did your wife notice while driving having to use far more effort with her foot on the brake pedal to slow or stop the car?
What is the purpose of having a vacuum reservoir in the vacuum system?
Thank you for posting this excellent series.

Good video!! I have a 2001 golf with 2.0 AEG engine which looked pretty similar to the jetta showing on the video. I am wondering if the secondary air pump will turn on always when the weather is cold, say below 40F? The 2nd air pump would spin when I took used your method on the video by providing 12v from the car battery to the 100 relay without taking it off the relay box. But it would not turn on immediatley when I started my car the normal way. When I measured the voltage of the output of the relay socket, I got around 8.5v when I connected the grey and blue wires with a voltmeter. Can it be 8.5v not enough to energize the relay or there is something wrong with the relay? Please help. Many thanks

hey there thanks for ur video im getting the error p0412 and i thought it was the pump so i disconnected it and then i checked the voltage on the wire when i turn on the car and it doesn't give any.
Plus i tried to activate the air pump with a low voltage but it didn't turn on
You think there is more then 1 problem or did i just not put enough voltage to turn the pump on ?

I wonder how much it would cost to buy all the parts of a car. You can bet it's a lot more than the price of a new car. Dealers typically have three prices, one for their cost, one for what they charge to other pro mechanics, and one for DIY suckers and customers who walk in the door. Junk yards are not a great solution because there aren't so many available and because it's so much effort to get to the parts.

I had that same coolant tee break on me as well and i was able to find the tee by itself without all those other hoses for $15 radiator hose tee GENUINE VOLKSWAGEN GOLF RADIATOR HOSE TEE 1J0121087D. i got it from on eBay. the plastic the VW engineers chose was poor for the cooling system, its a epoxy resin base and epoxy absorbs hot water over time and breaks down, there is also a coolant pipe nicknamed crack pipe that fails often as well that is hard to access in the same area as the secondary air pump, I also discovered my output line on secondary air pump was cracked and you could hear air leak out for that first 65 second cold start but it didn't throw an error code, just made an embarrassing sound for the cold start up., so had to replace that and that dreaded crack pipe.I seem to spend more time under this car than in the driver seat. Id rather work on my shelbys any day.

What was the issue you were having with the car to go through this process and diagnoses?
