Volkswagen Jetta Secondary Air Injection Diagnosis Part 12 (Removing Combi Valve)

I wasn't planning to film this, but I thought that it may be beneficial to someone who wanted to replace their combi-valve. Because of its location, it looks intimidating that several components may need to be removed. It's actually a very easy job, and I describe the steps that's needed to remove the valve. Also, I show the combi valve components broken down into its individual entities. This is the last video of this series. I hope you learn something from the videos, and I appreciate you watching. Enjoy the video!

After working at several companies as a maintenance guy, went back to school for the second time and earned an ASEE. Got into control wiring of automated equipment. Later, went back to school again for refrigeration and did that for about four years. Went back to school again and got a BSEE and today I'm an electronics/electrical engineer. In the past, I worked on my own cars, but after a few years, decided to let others work on them. Got tired of them screwing things up, misdiagnosing, cont...)

and spending lots of money to where they should know how to diagnose. So, got back into repairing my own cars again, taking an interest in the electronic systems of how they work and how to troubleshoot them. Although, my background is mainly in industrial maintenance, cars are really no different in diagnosing them. It's just a matter of understanding the systems and from there you can devise your own methods to diagnose as you heard me mention several times. Thanks for the comment!

this video was the real help but I started with part 10 I believe it was awesome videos man

The fresh air drawn in when mixed with the exhaust gases will raise its temperature. This is because the mixture is richer when the engine is cold, and with more oxygen added it raises the temp which then helps to heat the cat faster. Just amazing to me to go to all this trouble with vacuum, valves, pump, etc. just to heat the cat faster. And still more amazing is how American cars dropped the air pump 40 years ago, yet German engineering still needs to use a smog pump. Yes, counterintuitive.

Thank you Joe for the comment! Wow, to show the shop which is a mess right now and the tools and test equipment would be a chore in itself. Once I get this car back together and do a little cleaning up, I'll try to put a video together on that. Thanks again for watching!

Thank you very much bendpak7000 for watching the videos and I'm glad that you liked them. Where and how did I gain my knowledge which is a big question? On the Suzuki video of installing the intake manifold that I did, I mentioned my background there. In summary, my Dad was an auto mechanic for over 40 years, so I grew up with him working on cars. However, I went into electronics working at Sylvania as a color TV troubleshooter. Later, went into industrial maintenance as an electrician. cont...)

Thanks for showing how those plastic hose connectors work

Ran out of run on my last post to you Dave and forgot to thank you for watching and for your comments.

I enjoy all of your videos you have made from start to date. You are very knowledgeable in diagnostics. Where and how did you obtain this knowledge?

Hi I have an 08 Jetta 2.5l and I put an intake on it and it had a rough idle so I put the stock one back on and it still had a rough idle but if I unplug the MAF sensor it it runs better so I replaced the MAF sensor and it's still doing it i double checked all the hoses to the intake and there all tight is there a possibility the dv hose could've popped off at the header assembly

Hey! I have the same 2.8 12V VR6 in my car, and it’s making a rattling noise coming from the passenger side. I have a code that’s telling my that my Secondary Air Injection pump is flowing incorrectly. Is there anything in the system that could produce the sound? It’s a rattling sound that appears on cold start, and once warm almost goes away. Just trying to find answers. Thank you!

My secondary air pump was filled with antifreeze!? I'm going to replace it as well as the combi valve but how can coolant get in there? 2005 1.8 Beetle

Hi, can you tell me exactly how this pump works? I'm interested in punching times. example: startup 1-2 minutes after which stops? does it start while the car is on? has pause time?

Hey, thanks for putting the 12 parts video for the secondary air injection system. I have the P0411 code in my 200 Jetta so I took the car to the mechanic to get his opinion. He thinks the Throttle Control valve is not working. This was surprising to me because I didn't see Throttle Control valve in any of your video or the schematic that involves the secondary air injection system for this car VR6 engine. Am I missing something?

It has always seemed counterintuitive, that drawing in room temp air will raise exhaust temperatures, but I guess I understand the accelerated combustion idea. It's too bad that it doesn't improve fuel efficiency or engine performance. That also is counterintuitive.

On the 2002 1.8T the combi valve bolts aren’t easily accessible. Any advice?

At 0:40 what is the size of that o-ring?

Hey, thanks for making this! I have a question. Have you ever removed the combi valve from the 1.8T engine that was also found in the Golf and Jetta from this generation? My 2002 GTI is throwing the same P0411 code, and I'm thinking the combi valve is the culprit as the SAI pump and other components seem to work fine. I don't have the same bracket going from the head to the combi valve, and there are two hex bolts that look like they might be a similar bracket but they are obstructed by a coolant hose. Is it better to just try and wriggle the combi valve out by itself, or to take the bracket? Like on the VR6, the 1.8T combi valve has its attachment bolts coming up from the bottom.
