Volkswagen Jetta Secondary Air Injection Diagnosis Part 1 (Read Codes)

In this video, the victim is a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX with a VR6, 2.8L engine. The check engine light is on and the codes were read using two scanners. The codes retrieved were P1136 and P0411 and these codes will be addressed in future videos. Hope you enjoy the videos and thanks for watching!

Thank you very much for posting these video's. They were a HUGE help in helping me figure out the p0411 code that I got. I hate my check engine light being on and I have done a ton of additives and mod's to my car so it's important it run's correctly

Yes, I did a little research also and found the same thing. I believe that the pump is working as it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. And yes, it's job is to reduce emissions by injecting oxygen above the exhaust valves during a cold start. It also is supposed to run after following starts when warmed up for the ECM to do checks on the system. I'm hoping that there is a vacuum leak being a broken hose, etc. I haven't worked on Volkswagens that much, but I guess we'll all learn on this one. Thanks!

I spent a little time on the VW forums, and I found a number of people who had faiiling air pumps. Some decided not to repalce the air pump, reasoning that the main function the air pump is to reduce emissions, with little effect on performance. Of course such a vehicle would fail an emissions inspection but they said a new air pump is pretty expensive. I hope your solution is easier.

Hi Jerry, I have the same car, in black and like you, I love working on my cars, in part because my dad imparted his frugality in me.

I recently replaced the timing chains on my car (whoa, what a job!), and shortly thereafter it threw a P1411 code.  I haven't made time to diagnosis it yet but looking under the hood at the SAI system, I was overwhelmed with confusion as to where to start.

Thank you for your time, experience and effort to make and post these videos!  I've ordered high temp silicone hose and plan to crack the front open this weekend to get her done.

mr. stuzman, i told you once before that if i ever win the lottery, i'll send you some money for your detail advices(good money too). LOL
anyway, here we go again with my 2k MK4 jetta VR6. just when i thought that i fixed something and everything is ok, something else goes wrong. that's right this morning i got a P0411 fault code. since i purchased this car in 2009 for $2800, i must have spent $7000 in parts alone to keep this vw out of the Intensive care.

@stuzman do you know much about 1997 mk3 2.0 vw Jetta? I know my Air Pump works (when testing directly from the Battery) but there is no power getting sent to Air Pump during start up. I also know the Air Check valve is ok the Flapper opens and closes.

What are all the components to check? What fuses and relays would I check?

I hope you're aware the the secondary air system only kicks in when the engine is cold and you start it. And then it's only on for probably 30 seconds. If you had started that car up before you plugged it in the generic software, that's the reason why it says it's complete but showed no faults.

2k MK4 jetta Vr6. if i postpone fixing the P0411 code for a few weeks, will it damage my 02 sensor and catalytic convertor? this car can't go one year trouble free.

And everytime i am in stop sign or a red light, once i brake completly i feel the car like if it want to acelerate and the rpms bounce just a bit but it is noticible that the car want to go but i am not putting gas i hope you could help me sir
