I am currently reading Stupeur et Tremblement by Amelie Nothomb, a Belgium author.
As an intermediate beginner I'm surprised with myself for being able to understand 90% of the context of the book.
I read another novel by Amelie in Spanish, and it was quite "easy" as well.
So in my opinion she is a great author for language learners, I'd recommend.
