➡️ Which Finger Is Best for a Pulse Oximeter?
Pulse oximetry isn’t a new technology. It was implemented around the 1980s, but many advances have been introduced since then. Mostly, to increase the reliability of the readings. Accuracy is often the main concern in measuring oxygen saturation, and an interesting 2015 study observed how clipping each finger affected the results.

The verdict came out that the middle finger of the right hand gives the best accuracy. The thumb of the same hand follows. This is a bit of a surprise for clinicians and medical practitioners. The same study showed that about 80% of healthcare workers clip the patient’s index finger as a matter of course.

Place it on the side as well. It gives u better reading sometimes especially with the polish nails

what about a o2 ring? I have a sitting heart rate of around 42 beats a minute, I am 64 and now being evaluated for low o2 while sleeping, I use a cpap and have another sleep study scheduled in two months. I walk for about 4 miles a day, in two increments. I have trouble remembering things just learned.

So this has to be on the right hand then or does it matter which hand ?

There are a number of different common use cases for pulse oximetry, including:

to assess how well a new lung medication is working

to evaluate whether someone needs help breathing

to evaluate how helpful a ventilator is

to monitor oxygen levels during or after surgical procedures that require sedation👍

I just read A study says your right hand is the best but my left hand is one the doctor always uses and my readings appear to be more normal on the left. My right hand just said my pulse was 53 in my oxygen was 90.
My left says my oxygen is 97 in my pulse is 98.
I don't know what to believe anymore

Some times is also beneficial if you place the oxymetry on the side

So according to this video, the best finger to use is actually your middle finger? The next time your nurse wants to check your readings, go ahead and give her the finger. I dare you.

Learned about this two years ago or when my Mum first became gravely ill with a lung condition that necessitated constant oxygen level monitoring. She also has cor pulmonale and thus the oxygen level on both of her hands vary to some degree. I always use the lower-valued hand which is obviously the right hand just to be sure her oxygen level is up to par.
