Something I started doing after 4 years of failing to tame my two budgies is slow down, and instead of focusing on them feeling safe with me, I focus on them being confident in their surroundings, reacting well to changes and new objects, and on me being predictable.
I've got some signals for them that they know. Clicking my tongue means I'm coming near them (this is AMAZING. They've learnt that the clicking means I'm going to reach out to the area they're near to change food or objects. They have also learnt that if I DON'T click, it means I'm not coming near the cage to reach into the cage or anything like this, just doing my own stuff. This is helping so, so much!) I always ask them if they're ready for me to close the cage, and they either stay comfy or move nearer the cage door. Works well. I also try to say "finished" when I'm done so they know I'm leaving them alone. I also encourage foraging.
Their daily mix is now full of dry herbs, and sometimes I also cover their bowls with something more, and they have some spots in the room where they have other foods that aren't that easy to access. I bring them new wild plants to eat even though I know they won't eat much, I bring them new branches as often as I can so their environment keeps changing. Not a lot at once. It's bring a new branch, wait until they sit ofen on it and eat on it, and bring a new one (they respond better each time. Today they weren't scared of a new branch at all, they sat on it a couple hours after I gave it to them). I give them a lot more veggies than I did before. They get completely different foods, they get vitamins and calcium prescribed by the vet, they get more toys, they get new branches in places they were scared of.
And the progress is slow, very slow. But when I compare how they act now and how they acted three or four months ago, it's a crazy change. More energetic, busier, more confident and open to changes, louder, and they don't see me as a threat, just somebody they don't want to come that near to them. If I come near them without clicking, they'll just look at me, maybe move a little, just that. If they decide they're tired of veggies and foraging and want some "real food", they sometimes even fly close to me (like, towards me, almost above my head, and go back to their perch). This is amazing progress. So if anybody here has adult budgies that just won't get tamed, maybe that could work :) slow and steady changes

Right now they're getting ready to sleep on a homemade ladder, on a branch that is around 30 cm below the curtain rod, their favorite spot. The only place they'd go lower than the courtain rod before was their cage, that is also put in a high spot. That's A LOT of progress

facts in this vid. i sold my zebra finches and got budgies at petco. finches are cool but no patience too train it since they typically don't like human interaction. downside with my budgies is their wings are clipped (from petco). They're young so that's a plus. within 1 week, they already got close too me.. rely on me, ate off my hand, let me pet them. But will wait until another couple weeks before taking them out the cage.

Both my budgies are 2 yrs old, M & F, very stubborn. Will take millet spray if i stand still from my hand but will not let me touch. Everyday we do this. They put themselves to bed or sleep on the blinds as they are unclipped and free range to fly in the living room to stretch their wings. Maybe one day I'll get lucky.

Ok question, is putting your finger in the cage and bringing the budgie out of the cage still forcing or is it perfectly fine?
