Thank you, the renaming worked. But why was W10 suddenly unable to find the exe files for several apps? It only happened this morning. A virus scan found nothing. Started to do a chkdsk but Windows reported back that I didn't need to and that all was fine.

this is not a fix, it's a workaround. a fix would make it so you don't have to rename the file.

So this worked but what caused the problem in the first place? This seems like a temporary fix. I had this happen only with Adobe Acrobat pdf file extension and Adobe Elements psd file extension. fyi - i had to rename the executable. ist option did not work.

Just delete this key from registry:
NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
(The whole "registry folder").
You can export it as a backup if you aren't sure what are you doing.
