Good advice, with one caveat: If you do what the boss says you need to do to earn the promotion, but then the boss spins that into a negative on your next review, then the problem is probably that you're already overqualified, and the boss sees you as a threat. Becoming more overqualified will not help. It's time to find a new job.

In supply chain, a lot of businesses have a clearly defined unspoken social construct. If you don’t fit in or someone high on the ladder doesn’t like you; no matter what your work ethic is, you will not be considered for promotions.

*Sometimes you don't get promoted simply because the person or people who make said decision don't like you notwithstanding you skills and abilities*

Plenty of people don’t get what they deserve.

Well the Good Old Boys Club is a HUGE part of promoting anywhere. If you think it’s not your a fool!

Politics isn’t based on merit - it is based on personal preference. There is no “prep” that will solve personal preference issues.

Great podcast! I've been passed over before for Sgt. at my police department and it only made me work that much harder for the next time.

You leave the company. Watch them slowly fold due to their now lack of productivity that you brought. Poach their brightest candidates. Make things better for everyone.

Been trying this tactic with my wife but apparently I have a lot of shit to work on before I get promoted over her.

It's pretty easy when it happens once. But as it happens more and more it can become pretty fucking disheartening.

Everything he says is very true, but you also have to consider that we live in a very "unfair" world, so u gotta factor in that aswell..

I remember a few of my friends and I being disappointed not picking up corporal, so I did as many extra courses as I could, worked hard to improve my PT and rifle scores, kept my mouth shut and stayed quietly motivated. I eventually promoted to corporal and because I put in the extra work I promoted to sergeant in nine months after picking up corporal. Ahead of many of the other Marines I came in with at the same time. I wasn’t really any better than they were, in fact a few of them were natural PT studs and others typically did a little better on the rifle range than I did. But the extra effort made the difference. Plus at that time they lowered the cutting score so the extra points payed off earlier than I expected. For me the real victory was the promotion to sergeant because I was not expecting it.

Beware the promotion trap.
Being promoted isn’t what you think it is.

It’s called Retirement, it’s not worth it if it requires you to compromise certain aspects of your life moving forward.
