I have always preferred going straight into my amps. I bought the Ryra and don’t like it with the gain up. However, I’m totally blown away by it with the gain off and the tone and vol knobs set around 11’ o’clock. When set like this, it never goes off, improves the tone of any amp (to my ears) and it really weaponizes the functionality of my guitar’s tone and vol knobs.

Nice playing man 🤜

I think that the light on the Ryra is too bright, but I think that is true of many pedals with blue or white lights.

The Klon was really designed to run into clean, high headroom Fender amps (like the Twin reverb), and push them into overdrive. But they can do so much more tone shaping.
Once you get used to it, try stacking it after your other gains... it does amazing things there.

Paul, your playing has led to me over time focusing more on core tones and riding my volume knob way more for different shades. As a result, my dynamics have improved tremendously, and i wanna thank you for that. The Ryra sounded killer, really adds to the overall great tone you get. I feel a tool really suited to you would be an attenuator of sorts that would allow you to run your amps at a breathing level with manageable volume. Give it a thought. Cheers from Portugal!

This is such a great video. I love the honesty off the top "It's all a bunch of crap." Haha that clarity and honesty made my day!

Hi Paul. Nice to see some 'raw' playing. A man in tune with his guitar, playing some proper blues. I'm interested in your first impressions. I think you will come to love the pedal. I bought one about 18 months ago, also a gold one. I started to use it as a purely clean boost to start with - zero gain, treble and output both at noon. It's here that you'll find it has the most sparkle and great for just pushing the amp into breakup and adding some sizzle. I then started to experiment with the gain control. As soon as you move it you will notice a bit more compression on the overall sound and a loss of some of those high frequencies even at around 8 or 9 o'clock. If you miss those sparkley trebles then you just add a bit more to let it poke through again. Then there's the sound where the gain is around 1 or 2 o'clock. I think of this as the Larry Carlton tone - obviously depending on which guitar and amp you use. The thing is I like both of these sounds which prompted me to buy another Ryra! In silver this time. I can honestly say that this combination of it's 2 separate uses or one cascading into the other is the best sound I've ever had. Every type of guitar I use - I'm a bit like you - tele, les paul, les paul jr dc, sg, strat, all sound better with the klone. Every amp I use it with - plexi, twin, sheldon all sound better with the klone feeding it. Then there's the benefits further up the chain - other pedals sound better with the klone whether before or after. The pedal has helped my playing and I've become more focused on the articulation of the notes, where it's plucked, how hard/ soft, how much vibrato, etc. It has helped me play less notes with more focus if that makes sense. Anyway, I'm enjoying your channel and your playing. Hope you enjoy the pedal.

Nice one Paul! Really glad you like it as I recall recommending you try one. Truth be told, your tone is always spot on for my money. Your Cornell Romany is something special. Only issue is how hard it is to get one in Canada.

I love that you used the 'creme brulee' analogy. There was (maybe still is) a klone called that by Tone Bakery.

When Bill Finnegan was still building the original big box version of the Klon Centaur, if you wanted to order one he would ask you to call so he could discuss with you whether the Centaur would or wouldn't help you to get the kind of sounds you were hoping to get. He would ask what gear you were using, what kind of music you were playing, etc. He wanted to make sure the customer would be buying the right sort of pedal. As on the Klon Centaur, the RYRA's Gain control has a dual/stacked potentiometer that simultaneously affects gain and tone, adding mids and reducing low end as you turn it up.

If the Klon is your thing then the Ryra is amazing value for money. I must admit I favour a harem of pedals but one thing I have always loved about a Klon is knobs that you can see the setting of at a distance. Great playing as always.

Used to be distortion was achieved with varying amounts of preamp and power tube clipping and because tubes produce lovely musical harmonic content everything sounded lovely, nowadays there’s so many various pedals that provide a whole gamut of various harmonic content, some like the Klon clones do it without sounding too harsh like some solid state circuits can be, also those harsh ones can be helpful for cutting through the mix in live situations so there’s my two cents that nobody asked for. BTW, the word you’re looking for is unity gain and as always love your playing, your accent and your spirit!

I agree with you Paul, it adds a little cherry on top of the sundae. Not too overwhelming, just right. Keep up the great work!

Paul: "It's all a bunch of shit" is the best way I have heard overdrive/fuzz/distortion pedals described. A great guitar into a great tube amp that is cranked and "in the sweet spot" is my favorite distortion, boost, overdrive, whatever the hell you want to call it.

Hey Paul, lovely playing on that intro! I love a Klon-style pedal, to me it just adds a certain indefinable & wonderful something that you don’t get out of a guitar directly in to the amp. Keep on rockin!
