Klon vs Klone - Don't Make The Same Mistake I Did!

In todays video I compare my newest pedal a Kon KTR with a Ryra Klone. Both of these pedals are Klon Centaur style pedals but do they actually sound that different and is the rising price of the KTR worth the hype?

In this video, all of the guitar tones are coming from the AXE FX 3 with the pedals going in the front.

This is not a sponsored video, Ryra dont know I'm making this video. However, if you'd like to check out the RYRA Klone click the link below.

The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

I sold my original Klon for a crazy amount of money. I bought a RYRA and I don't miss the original at all. Less noise and more compact.

Very honest review, thanks for that. Honestly, your tone is outstanding, pedals are pretty secondary since you have a great touch and sound to begin with

Brilliant shoot out. The video was exactly what I was looking and hoping for - a straight up comparison with great playing and tone. Excellent job. Cheers.

Thanks mate. Thought my ryra was doing the job but it’s always nice to hear some one else give it props. Nice job

I love my Ryra. I’m sure you’re gonna get this from other comments but if you’re going to do an A/B of such similar pedals, a switcher is probably necessary. Good demo

Regarding 4:55: It's wonderful to see someone remember that parts, in particular potentiometers, have tolerances. If two instances of the same circuit sound different, it may be that you need to dial in one to sound like the other; setting the pots to the same physical position is insufficient. In that sense two original Klons will sound as different as the difference between an original Klon and a Klone. So it was refreshing to see you try dialing things in at 5:15.

I have the tumnus deluxe and the warm audio centavo...both just out of this world fantastic tones in these and very different ranges despite the similarities

Great review, very helpful! Beside the Sound of the Pedals, which i found you compared very well, the Clean sound you get out of the Axe is Amazing. I didn`t know that it takes pedals so well. But what i like most is the way you play guitar and make music with it. Great touch, choice of notes and feel. cheers

The Klon or Klones of, are often used for always on pedals to sweeten/clean boost. They hit the first tube, or preamp stage nicely. So it would be interesting to do the same demo with a high end tube amp. None of my gain pedals sounds exactly the same into my fractal, vs tube amp. 2¢

I ordered a ryra a couple years ago and have barely turned it off since. It is absolutely perfect for me. Could not be happier

Have 2 ryra pedals. Worth every penny.

I run the Ryra into a Mesa Rectoverb 25 to brighten things up while playing at bedroom levels. It works great!

To me: the Ryra are better looking, better made, cheaper and sound as good as the KTR.

Good demo! Both of these are great. I’ve tried both and I’ve gotta say in a band situation the way the KTR tucks in the low end and it’s specific eq curve in the midrange gives it a big edge on the RYRA. The KTR also has a smoother breakup throughout its gain range. RYRA is a great pedal regardless! Just feels like when I’ve gigged both the KTR was really really designed for someone to be playing/sitting in the mix. So far haven’t found a copy that’s nailed it to the same level of detail! Shame it’s gone into silly money second hand. No overdrive pedal is worth over £500…

Since you have an Axe-FX III how about a comparison of the KTR with the Klone in the Axe?

Well done! Nice, straightforward demo. Even with what sounds like a reverb-enriched sound, the nature of each of these effects shows through. IMO, the quality of both far outweighs the minor differences, most of which can be dealt with by using the guitar, and if necessary the amp, tone controls. Players who really obsess about the differences between these two boxes, or other klones are, I think, getting too far into the weeds. Do you really "need" one rather than the other? I had an original gold horsie Klon that I bought for $400 and sold for $5K to one of the most respected guitarists in the U S of A. I used some of that money to get a first run KTR (for about $150, if I recall correctly) which I eventually sold for $600 when I bought my present klone, the Rimrock Effects Mythical Overdrive (I considered the Ryra, too, but just hate the enclosure art!). Point is: I could perceive slight differences at every step of this series of pedals, but none was genuinely impactful or unable to be adjusted. Personally, I wish Bill Finnegan, whose research and prototyping and testing yielded this circuit, ought to get $10 for every klon-type pedal sold. What an impact! Anbd thanks for this video.

As much as I love my helix...it is a demo like this that makes me miss my tube amps. I'm required by law to use generic adjectives to describe guitar tone but it is a very organic tone. And if it can sound good through my phone's speakers i know it sounds amazing sitting in front of that amp. Edit....just read the description and realized you are playing the axefx....well shit I'm confused now 🤣🤣🤣
