A cop stopped me for a speeding ticket when coming down from an overpass (radars dont work well at an angle). First question was "Do you know how fast you were going?" Any number I say could be used against me so I said "Dont know. I was driving the flow of traffic" In California you cant be given a ticket if you are driving flow of traffic. Cop still gave me a ticket for a 65 in a 55. Now this was an expressway which had been recently widened, repaired and recarpeted and after the improvement all traffic was traveling faster than 55. So I went to the court and requested a traffic survey in writing. In California after an Highway is modified in a significant manner, the city needs to do a traffic survey to set a new legal safe speed for the road. The city did not respond. On the day of traffic court I told the judge I had asked for a traffic survey and the city had not responded. Case thrown out.

I'm a retired LEO. My field training officer taught me on the first day to NOT ask the violator if they knew why they were stopped. That is unprofessional. I was taught, and agree, that you approach the violator and greet them, then tell them why they were stopped, request their drivers license and insurance card, explain that they are getting cited or a warning, and then go back and write the paper. Also, you could ask why they were doing what they were doing and possibly let them go if the reason made sense. I felt my job was not to screw with the public, but to keep everyone safe.

In most EU countries, it is explicitly prohibited to the Police to not say the truth or lead a citizen to a trap, which makes any accusation null before Law.. It is usually shown even on TV and remarked that trick questions you see in American movies are not legal in your country, nor does the judiciary system work in the same as portrayed in those films.

The cops being able to lie to you has always bothered me. You lie to them you are breaking the law. Then cops say things like it will go better for you if you admit to me that you ( fill in the blank). It will never go better for you if you admit anything. Yep, always keep your mouth shut.

If a cop asks if he can look in your vehicle/house/whatever, ask yourself what is he looking for? The answer is he is looking for something that he can arrest you for having.
