Is This The Simplest Dry Fly in the World To Tie?

Well it’s a pretty easy one to tie if you follow this step-by-step. And the result is perhaps one of the most effective imitations of an olive you’ll find anywhere. Subtle changes in hook size, and maybe the colour of the dubbing you use, will cover almost any eventuality. But simply, the ‘Simple Olive’ is a pattern that deserves a place in your dry fly box for almost any still water or river situation. Here it’s tied in a Size 14, but go bigger on a 12, or smaller on 16, 18 or 20 to give you the option you need to match the hatch.

Materials:
Hook: Hanak 130 BL in 14, 16, 18 or 20
Tying Thread: Olive Nanosilk
Tail: 3 x Coq de Leon Fibres
Wing: 3 x CDC feathers tips aligned (use 2 x feathers on Sizes 18’s and 20)
Dubbing: Semperfli Kapok Olive Dun
Hackle: Tip of a a small feather from a grizzle cape
Head: Pinch of Fox Squirrel

Looks like a great search and prospecting fly to try out on spring creeks. Definitely going to tie this pattern in a couple sizes and colors

Being a new to tie flying although I’m in my late 60’s Thanks so much for this simple olive pattern I tied it last year after seeing this video and caught fish every time 👍I’m currently trying 18 & 20’s ready for the start of this season in April

Nicely tied but the are lots of dry flies you could have chosen that are far simpler to tie

Lovely fly, will be trying this tomorrow. Tried my very first fly today a grey wulff, maybe not the easiest fly to start on but my hook size was 14, tad small for a beginner so ill maybe try a few of yours at size 10 👍. Thankyou!!
